Many congressional staffers I interview in my research say they wish that the same science groups visiting the other party's offices would also reach out to them.

When some staff feel ignored by scientists, they may not seek out their guidance on legislation.

The result is two different policy conversations happening on single issues by each party across Capitol Hill. That’s bad for democracy & chips away at the ability to compromise.

so disappointing - but maybe not surprising - to hear some of the excuses scientists gave for not engaging with congressional offices opposite their own political affiliation
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

There was an informational hearing on Gain of Function research in the previous congress that the Democrats did not even attend. I was actually stunned--what kind of a message does that send? Anyway, it just allowed the Republicans to write the entire narrative, which seems like a bad outcome for Democrats?

Today we've released a new update to our iOS app! It brings an improved sign-up flow, home screen widgets, and many accessibility improvements.

apps.apple.com/us/app/mastodon…

in reply to Mastodon

OK, this was my first sign up attempt in the follow-up version. I would not say this is a better experience for newcomers haha.
in reply to Mike Beasley

That's on us, that server should not be in the General category but it is. I can update that in our database.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @MikeBeas @neave wow. This is a very difficult design problem and the random signup is super bad and not even a bandaid solution.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @neave fair enough, but it seems like a lot of servers are gonna get caught off guard by this.

i was given this server for Jewish folks, which i am not. worries me that people with anti-semitic views could be pushed onto such a server by default and create problems for the users and admins there. even if they wouldn’t seek out the server to join, it is now presented to them as the default here. a bit of an issue i think.

in reply to Mike Beasley

@MikeBeas @neave I just moved this one to the Religion category. There might be some categorization issues on the data side, but in principle, this should work. Of course, nothing beats just directing people to mastodon.social by default.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @neave hopefully the idea of federated social media catches on quickly and people come to grasp it so that this sort of thing will only be a short-term issue haha
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @MikeBeas maybe the UX should involve some helpers like, “This doesn’t seem like my cup of tea, try again”

Probably should have a tighter, more curated, selection of servers to randomly pick from, vs just a use-the-general-category situation. At least to start or until you can verify data cleanliness

in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @MikeBeas @neave looks like this would benefit from using a hard-coded allow list until categorization is improved
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @MikeBeas @neave I think making mastodon.social/online is probably the easiest way to do this, considering user data would be processed through you guys and not a random general server!

Man, I don't know. I loved Fawlty Towers, but the way he's been lately? I'm worried it'll deliberately make fun of progressive politics (in a not particularly funny way), or be homophobic or transphobic.

We are all too familiar with the all-too-often catastrophic impacts of #COVID19 #infection on human #health.

This fascinating new #metagenomics research in mBio explores a potentially important and intriguing link between the presence and relative abundance of different functional guilds present in the human gut #microbiome (including short chain fatty acid biosynthesis and virulence functions) and disease severity and outcomes resulting from the virus. Clearly a subject for future extended studies to explore potential increases in severity due to infection and exacerbated or mitigated by differences in gut microbiomes.
