Studying breakdowns in sci/tech institutions during #covid19 ? or how about systematic undermining of scientific institutions as democracies veer to extremes? We want to know what you're finding!

@zephoria and I are excited to host a wider conversation about institutional breakdown, organizational failure, crisis and collapse and implications for Science & Technology.

#sts #orgs & #scitech scholars warmly welcome! Check out P358 on this page of awesome panels:

🇫🇮 Finland: Air purifiers used at daycare centres cut kids' sick days by a third

"It would be a big savings if we could get rid of 30% of sick days spread by children, as well as the illnesses that go home to parents," Dr Sanmark said.

Yup. Looks like you can atone for original antigenic sin. As with all learning, repetition is key 🥲 (The sky ain’t falling. Imprinting is real, but reports of the immune system’s demise were premature.) h/t @thelonevirologist.bsky.social #Virology #VaccinesWork #Omicron #Covid19 #science https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-06753-7

The Economist used global excess deaths to arrive at the true death toll from the pandemic with a 95% confidence interval.

"Although the official number of deaths caused by #COVID19 is now 7m, our single best estimate is that the actual toll is 27.5m people. We find that there is a 95% chance that the true value lies between 17.8m and 30.8m additional deaths."

> Both SARS-CoV-2 and non-COVID-19 acute respiratory infections are associated with a wide range of symptoms more than 4 weeks after the acute infection<

In other words, long Covid is a thing, but is not completely unique to Covid.

In the United States, the new #COVID19 #vaccine should be free — that's not a wish, that's a statement of fact. If you have health insurance, your insurer should pay for it outright or reimburse you. If you don't have insurance, you can still get it for free. All the details.👇

Get vaccinated.

City of Hope in Duarte, California, has maintained masking requirements, and this has prevented hospital-acquired #COVID19 there entirely, according to Vijay Trisal, MD, chief medical officer at City of Hope.

“Our policies enabled us to achieve zero nosocomial infections, zero outbreaks.”

A new 🧵 on the #COVID19 situation:

I am getting more cautious about #COVID19 again. I believe you should, too. New data:

- COVID in US wastewater has doubled in the past five weeks and is still rising (https://biobot.io/data/).

- US COVID hospitalizations are up 40% in a month and still rising (https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#trends_weeklyhospitaladmissions_select_00).

- COVID positive rate has risen over 150% in two months. It's now matched our highest positive rate in the last winter surge, and it's still rising (https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#trends_select_testpositivity_00)

An Unwelcome Visitor Returns This #Summer. Hint: It’s #Covid.
#Heatwaves are sending people to #airconditioned indoor spaces, where Covid transmits more easily compared with outside. Summer travel alsos plays a role, as people crowd into #airports and bring germs along with them crisscrossing world. #Covid19 hospitalizations as of July 15 are up 10.3% from previous week, according to #CDC. Emergency department visits are up 7% and test positivity rose to 6.3% from 5.8%.

#COVID19 🦠 continues to surge in #Taiwan 🇹🇼.

I encourage everyone to take precautions like mask wearing and hand sanitization. If someone has cold symptoms, walk away.

This is not a pleasant illness and infecting the wrong person could kill them.

Humans would win if they had included #Covid19

The CDC held a maskless conference of epidemic intelligence service officers — the disease detectives who identify and fight outbreaks. 2,000 people attended, and now the agency is warning people of confirmed #COVID19 cases at its own conference. These are the people tasked with protecting you. And people wonder why I remain so cautious.

A little damage to your brain and immune system is certainly worth a couple of maskless days in conference rooms, right?

A new study finds #COVID19 can rewrite your genome, leading to severe outcomes. “This particular finding is quite unique and has not been seen in other coronaviruses before… What we found here is a unique mechanism of SARS-CoV-2 that is associated with its severe impacts on human health.” https://med.uth.edu/anesthesiology/2023/03/23/study-sars-cov-2-the-virus-causing-covid-19-can-alter-genome-structure-of-our-cells/

You know, if our study of #COVID19 causes us to realize many other viruses also damage our heart, that is an argument for MORE masking, not less. The reaction shouldn't be, “I guess COVID risks are like other viruses,” but “if all viruses are dangerous to our hearts, we need more caution and protection.”

“Growing evidence supports the involvement of other viral infections in the development of arrhythmia.”

It turns out that a section of our #DNA that we received from Neanderthals is particularly associated with outcomes (mild, severe) of #COVID19 infections.

This paper outlines an approach ranging from population genetics to functional #genomics in which the researchers identified four important #alleles and their likely #regulatory function.

We are all too familiar with the all-too-often catastrophic impacts of #COVID19 #infection on human #health.

This fascinating new #metagenomics research in mBio explores a potentially important and intriguing link between the presence and relative abundance of different functional guilds present in the human gut #microbiome (including short chain fatty acid biosynthesis and virulence functions) and disease severity and outcomes resulting from the virus. Clearly a subject for future extended studies to explore potential increases in severity due to infection and exacerbated or mitigated by differences in gut microbiomes.

Here is a great online tool for visually estimating your #COVID19 risks. This interactive tool can show you the ways an infected person can infect others in different scenarios. Singing indoors (concerts, churches, etc.) is high risk (left), but if both people wear surgical masks, the risk is considerably less (right). #WearAMask! Here's the tool: https://www.bmj.com/content/375/bmj-2021-065312

In light of the ongoing #COVID19 pandemic, we now have an ongoing initiative to donate surgical masks to local communities.

If you are involved in our community (or one of the many partner projects), come take a look at this thread: https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=9544
