Fueled by a heatwave and prolonged drought, fires continue to burn in the Iberá National Park in northeastern Argentina.

The fires began in late December 2022 and were still ablaze when #Landsat 9 took these images on Feb. 19, 2023. go.nasa.gov/41efMuW

This false-color image makes it easier to distinguish unburned vegetation (green) from the recently burned landscapes (brown).

The image was made using infrared, near infrared, and visible light data from #Landsat 9.

What we learn about other planets informs our understanding of our own planet. A new study using archival NASA data shows that Venus may be geologically active in regions called coronae, providing hints about early tectonic activity on Earth. go.nasa.gov/3Isy03b

There are three kinds of timelines on here:

Home - Main timeline, shows all posts by accounts you follow, plus posts which include hashtags you follow

Local - Shows all public posts by all accounts on your server

Federated - Shows all public posts by all accounts that your server has noticed

On the official Mastodon app, Local is called "Community", click the magnifying glass 🔍 to see it.

This happens on a national level as well, when it comes to immigrants.

Why do small rural communities often shun newcomers, even when they need them?

This is what will, ultimately, kill communities like mine. I live in south Louisiana, about 40 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico.

Property insurance rates have nearly doubled in my area. The crisis is so bad that our state legislature created a $45 million fund to entice insurers to continue doing business here. Those who have weathered recent storms are being priced out of remaining in the area.

Moreover, the top five oil refiners in the U.S. are on the Texas/Louisiana Gulf Coast. 😳😳

I’m lucky in my work to see firsthand the impact of what we do on systems and the people that run them.

We’re supporting @Mastodon through #FastForward because @Gargron, @renchap, and the entire #Mastodon team are doing important work and we want to help them scale it with integrity.

Well and it’s pretty neat to have a front-row seat (walk-on part?) to the revolution 😎 #TheFutureIsFederated

A visualization of which generation controls the Senate. "A middle-of-the-pack Senator in 1947 was maybe 55 or 56-ish years old. Now, the middle seems to be 65 or 66, a whole decade older!" wcd.fyi/features/senate-genera…

Never heard the term "Missionary Generation" before! 🤔
in reply to kottke.org

To be fair, the US life expectancy in 1945 was around 64.7 years and in 2020 it was 78.8, so the Senate seems to be trending a little *younger* comparable to life expectancy?
