This brings back memories. Actually, I remember having these thoughts about elementary school text books, but we never came close to getting through our science text books.

In third grade, I had nephritis (following strep throat), and I was out so long, months, that the school sent me tutor to catch me up once I was well enough to sit up for an hour a day. It didn't take long to catch up, and I was able to use the extra time to do science chapters. I was so excited.

I've turned one of my teaching modules in #Paleontology into an #OER. It's only one single lab, but many more are waiting to be OER-ised... therefore I really need your input to avoid future mistakes.

Thanks to the feedback (shoutout to @leouieda and @JMMaok) I knew this:
✅ Must be editable
✅ Must include rubric
✅ Must include an example: I included a possible solution but without an essay, just the code. Now in #Rlanguage but #Python and #JuliaLang will follow.

The most watershed decision was to use #Quarto for everything to make it editable and renderable using Open Source tools and to make it version control-compatible. For people not familiar with #Quarto this may be a barrier?
Not sure what a good alternative would be. #OpenPedagogy

The #Tory model for #socialcare:

1. defund local councils, while retaining their social care responsibilities;

2. Budget cuts make #infrastructure increasingly harder to maintain (or replace);

3. 'Encourage' councils to use private provision to make up gap between need & public provision for care;

4. 'allow' market rates to be set by providers & open sector to #investment to spur 'innovation' in provision;

5. watch taxpayers money flow to the rich (not the needy)

Thanks to Miguel Godinho Ferreira & Karina Xavier for the invitation to teach in the "From Cells to Organisms" module in the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciencia PhD program.

Here's a classic reading recommendation for anyone interested in the topic who's looking for a starting point.

Okay, that's funny, but still ... that can't be a real question considering her yellow outfit is Tarantino's direct homage to Bruce Lee's iconic original.
in reply to Muse

@Isaac Kuo No doubt someone shot down Tarantino's ego with your insight. But the little girl is the best!

How Our Roads Have Become an Invasive Species
Ours is a time of what environmental journalist Ben Goldfarb describes as an “infrastructure tsunami.” The automobile reigns supreme and civilization’s appetite for new roads appears insatiable. There are about 40 million miles of roadways in the world, Goldfarb writes, and our collective future will bring many more cars and the need for even more roads. But the environmental and social costs of this tsunami are almost unimaginable.

I know it's not doing anything special compositionally, but I like this shot anyway. My wife.

@eumrz Yes, film is making a comeback, same as vinyl. Kodak still makes film, and you can find film labs that will develop and scan film for you in many major cities. Look through #BelieveInFilm for more.

When sperm whales need a nap, they take a deep breath, dive down about 45 feet and arrange themselves into perfectly-level, vertical patterns. They sleep sound and still for up to two hours at a time between breaths, in pods of 5 or 6 whales, presumably for protection. No one knew whales slept vertically until a 2008 study documented the behavior. And no one captured really good photography of it in the wild until 2017 with Patrick Dykstra documenting sperm whales.

I don't want to be discouraging, but this was already attempted with OStatus, which was going for the same thing with Atom feeds. It did not survive in that form, as the complexities of ActivityPub turned out necessary for real-world use outside developer circles.

You'd have to be a genuine idiot to trust your entire financial life to Elon Musk, but he's counting on millions of idiots to do just that. Don't be one of them.

Oh I agree Muse, it's just as wrong with any animal. It just seems to me that there is a certain amount of hypocrisy between dog people and cat people.
in reply to Muse

I like animals. Pretty much all animals. I might make an exception for mosquitoes, but generally speaking. Our breeding has done horrible things to many domesticated animals including cows, chickens, pigs, etc. Industrialisation and capitalism have had us turn living beings into things for use. The cycle of life can be brutal, but that is no excuse for our making it even more brutal by not extending empathy to the rest of our living family, and therefore treating them with dignity and respect. A number of Native American Indian tribes pray not to a god at a meal, but give thanks to and ask forgiveness of the animals they must kill to eat.

'Otto Hahn, who remained in Berlin, was so dependent on Meitner that he continued to collaborate with her, even after she’d fled to Sweden. He sent her the results of their experiments on postcards via courier. It was Meitner, not Hahn, who analyzed the results and discovered that they had split the atom. It was Meitner, not Hahn, who coined the term for her discovery—“nuclear fission”.

@textualize Okay, it's early days yet with this project and much left to fix, but hope others will pile in and help out! If you would like to add this project to be aggregated by the "Good First Issues" project at hpc.social/projects/good-first… (scroll down to the bottom of the page to see the part directed to maintainers), we'll see if we can get some folks to help out with this.
