From the archives of RTÉ (Ireland's national broadcaster): This show was recorded in 1962 about the establishment of the signal towers for rural radio and television broadcast.

In it an engineer named John O'Keefe described how they chose the sites for masts in an unusual way. Rather than the usual process using contour maps, they made a 3D model of Ireland and placed lights on hills to see how signal would travel. From about 20 mins in here: rte.ie/archives/2012/1022/3426…

in reply to Fionnáin

A linked question to #mastodaoine : I know this is a long shot, but in the documentary that I linked in the last toot, I'd love to know if anyone knew/knew about the engineer John O'Keefe, pictured here.

This was in 1962, and O'Keefe must be in their 50s at the youngest, so over 100 now. More likely there might be a death notice, a living relative, or someone that worked with them. Would be grateful for any help.

in reply to Fionnáin

This is the beginning stages of a new art project on the five regional transmitters in Ireland.

I'm already hooked on the amazing consequences of the banal publication from the European Broadcasting Conference of 1952 (Stockholm), and how frequencies were allocated to different countries.

The steel imported from Norway, electronics from Britain, and regulations decided in Sweden already spread this so far. A single object like a signal tower can have complex social and material relationships.

This is a painting of the Australian pobblebonk frog. I created the frog by dabbing a bazillion little dots onto the canvas. At this size it’s hard to see every single dot! I have gone dotty!

Photos of the forests of the Dandenong ranges always look like they should include a dinosaur or two! In Australia we genuinely have primeval forests with plants from the Eocene. We are talking about these plants fluorishing tens of millions of years ago!

Well, the first thing that is said about the daplogonosaurous is that it is green. It's sort of like a Preying Mantis, but in dinosaur form, but without the friendly smile that one sees on Mantises. Daplogonosaurous is mostly vegan, although at 6:45pm on the 14th of the second month of each season it tries to find, and eat, a BBQ tri-tip sandwich - it is an animal that abides by a printed schedule. Daplogonosaurous is renowned for its ability to hide - which is probably why no fossil remains have ever been found.
in reply to Muse

@Karl Auerbach What an amazing creature! I may need to start making some BBQ tri-tip sandwiches and see if I can lure one out of our primeval forests!

Data from the Kepler #space telescope suggest there may be as many as 300 million potentially habitable planets in our galaxy alone.

We may never have evidence proving whether intelligent life is somewhere out there, but - as Carl Sagan once wrote, “If it’s just us, seems like an awful waste of space.”

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

I'm waiting for the grand discovery of some —‌ to us until then unknown but obvious in retrospect —‌ form of communication where long diatribes between planetary folk have been happening in real time while we muse in darkness.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

The chances of there *not* being other planets with intelligent life forms is close to zero.

Do you need help with using Mastodon and the Fediverse? Especially if you're a beginner or unsure about techy things?

You can ask by messaging me or replying to this thread, and I'll try to help or find someone else who can help. Don't worry if a question seems silly or basic!

You can also look things up on the guide at fedi.tips, which has an "essentials" section at the top and a complete list of answered questions below that.

in the part on running a server, it would be great to develop materials on cultivating a healthy, co-governed community.
in reply to Nathan Schneider

@ntnsndr

That might be more to do with the legal structures available in a person's country?

There's nothing to stop a co-operative setting up a server with joint legal ownership. They could use official meetings to vote on who would be assigned admin accounts etc.

As far as software goes, the owner account of the server has lots of options for assigning roles to other accounts on the server. There are premade roles, but they can create custom roles too. I'll try and add an article about it!

in reply to FediTips has moved!

@jalcine thanks, yes, it's good to see this. A few other topics perhaps of interest around community and servers:

- Developing transparent contributions and expenses with Open Collective
- Using Announcements to communicate with members
- Conflict resolution among members
- Cultivating a diverse and welcoming community

in reply to Nathan Schneider

@jalcine FWIW, here is a guide a few of us at Social.coop did: wiki.social.coop/wiki/How_to_M…

We are a cooperative, but actually not quite legally; we operate democratically through our bylaws and member contributions. Legally our parent is a different co-op.

in reply to Nathan Schneider

@ntnsndr @jalcine

I think that would be beyond my remit, as those would apply to anyone running an online community with any kind of software? I'm trying to focus on the Fediverse specifically.

I volunteer in various orgs but I don't have experience running a co-op, so I'm not sure I'd be right person for writing about this.

in reply to FediTips has moved!

@jalcine Fair enough! I'm exploring the idea of doing an incubator for new fediverse communities, and hopefully we'll produce some docs to share there.

I do think that the fediverse has unique challenges with diversity and inclusion, and these issues deserve more focused attention. But maybe "tips" isn't the right place for that.

Thank you for all your great work! You have done so much to make this space more friendly and accessible.

in reply to Nathan Schneider

@ntnsndr @jalcine

If you've got something together that relates to the Fediverse, I could give it a shout out if you like? There might be others in similar situation who would appreciate your work?

At my workplace, we're looking into how we can support the processing of very large datasets in R. It would be wonderful if some bioinformaticians could answer a couple of questions to direct us to the problem points.

We're hoping that we can publish something out of this that will be helpful to everyone in the field: forms.office.com/r/jNd2cbEZkh
