This whole article about who can and can't detect AI writing is fascinating!

The average person essentially does no better than chance, but a panel of 5 people who use AI for writing every day got only 1 in 300 wrong.

The screenshot describes how they look at the writing differently.

@nebunez It helps when you know the usual quality of output you'd expect from the student. It also helps when you can ask follow-up questions and watch them deconstruct into their constituent organs before your very eyes.

And Valve doesn't need a SteamDeck 2 to achieve that... Looks like maybe some people should learn a thing or two about how the hardware horsepower race kills the industry...

I hear Valve is going to release a version of Linux that's optimized for games. They obviously have one for Steam Deck, but they are apparently making one optimized for PCs.

You guys.

This is a picture of my first dog. He was a black lab called King.

He joined our family when I was 3.

I loved him with all my heart.

For various (very legitimate) reasons, my parents gave him away when I was 6 or 7.

I remember watching him ride off in the back of an old pickup surrounded by other children.

King lived a long happy life with those children, but I never stopped missing him.

It’s hard to put this moment into words—especially as scientists.

Watching vital agencies dismantled, brilliant colleagues dismissed, and critical data erased is not just heartbreaking—it’s a loss that reverberates far beyond the scientific community.

But science is resilient. We are resilient.

And we will carry our knowledge, passion, and purpose forward—prepared to rebuild stronger together.

that's what worries me, how much data is actually being lost, as opposed to just removed from public view.

Ahah @Gargron I really thought he was because of the logo.
I even searched online to see if I could find a blue plushie.

Sorry, but did my notes on the Stanford Blockchain Governance Summit on bsky: bsky.app/profile/ntnsndr.in/po…
in reply to Nathan Schneider

Thanks (and sorry I couldn’t make it - graduation).

One tempering point is that a lot of these aspirational applications you talk about are public goods and/or need network effects. That makes them way harder, for adoption, than just writing code and publishing it, or even than launching a startup. (Startups address public goods and network effects in one main way, by dumping VC billions into becoming a monopoly in the space, and we know how that goes.) Another thing you can say for these parts of the blockchain community is that they recognize the unique value and challenge of public goods. But though they are actively working to address them, it’s tough. For one thing, they’re still subject to individual incentives, so public good can become “public good owned by a monopoly that I have a piece of”.

in reply to Bo Waggoner

@bwag 1) they are currently getting major policy support, and there are no network effects like the US government

2) I think precisely the problem is that they assume the only way to build is with VC-style startups, when key internet infrastructure (ARPANET, GPS, Wikipedia, Linux) developed in other ways

Happy birthday to Dr. Cecilia Payne! Her 1925 PhD thesis has been described as “the most brilliant ever written in astronomy.”

At a time when few women entered academia, Payne discovered what the universe is made of. Her work began a revolution in astrophysics & more should know her name. #science #history

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Thank you for sharing this! I took a look at her Wikipedia entry and it looks like Russell stole all the credit for her work when developing the H-R diagram?? All too common in the history of science. Thank you for illuminating this for me! 🙂

ETA: Looks as though Russell did cite her research quite extensively, but isn't remembered for her contributions as much as she should be
