#BigTech under oath. ⚖️

Microsoft admits: it can’t guarantee French citizen data won’t be handed to foreign authorities, even under a “#SovereignCloud” deal. 🤯

Marketing vs. reality? The gap is wide.

this is all true, but I think it is likely that the EU Commission and EU parliament fold to the pressure of the dear US leader and Bigtech selling out privacy and freedom of EU citizens

in reply to Matthias

@Matthias maybe we should start blocking whole instances, if they don't start cooperating and helping to prevent spam.

And I don't care if it is mastodon.social or any other big server.

If they don't even take simple steps to prevent spam, then they are among the bad servers and spam distributors that leads to set them on official block lists.

in reply to hoergen

@hoergen
In my view, these servers are behaving recklessly. In the midst of a spam wave, there is no reason why moderation should not be tightened. Leaving registration open, on the other hand, is an invitation to anyone who wants to harm other people. This is something we are willing to accept. That is negligent and not a good calling card for the Fediverse as a whole.

Yes, such servers are unmoderated from my point of view

No user will be rejected. It may just take a little longer for the registration to be checked.

New Zootopia 2 trailer!

You have no idea how hard it was to get those water tubes to look just right. Engineering for that was like three months of my life right there.

Someone shared this elsewhere on the internet this week, and I have to pass it along!

It’s a website where you draw a fish, and then it swims around with other people’s fish. That’s it. That’s all it is.

thank you for sharing!

Who defines "violence" and "terrorism"? Can I be violent against fascists, as Popper and others taught me it's not only acceptable but likely needed?

Why are drugs in the list?

And (rhetorical) what happened to the declaration of independence of cyberspace? 😀

@Gargron I would like to report a serious AGPL license violation involving the project "Next Social" at sosyal.teknofest.app, which appears to use @Mastodon code without complying with licensing requirements.

It's easy to avoid Palm Oil, just read the labels! I realized that Earth Balance has palm oil and Miyoko's butter does not, so I just use Miyoko's now. Easy peasy.

We really need to get mainstream media talking about the insight explained in this article - theguardian.com/commentisfree/… - that their focus on “border spectacles” - such as the UK's 'small boats' reporting - leads directly, inevitably to mob violence.

The BBC etc would say they are just reporting events - but they're not. They entirely miss the context - for example they do not report that almost all immigration is by air, and is people with tickets and documents, or that the vast majority of people arriving without documentation are in fact subsequently found to be legitimate asylum seekers.

But these non-televisual border and legal processes don't make good broadcasting, and oligarchs' right-wing rags aren't drumming up hate around them, so the mainstream 'impartial' media doesn't think they're news either.

Even amid difficult headlines, I take comfort in the resilience of nature.

Trees keep growing. Fungi keep breaking things down. And the world keeps changing.

Our species is just one character in a far older story.

I hope we have the wisdom (and data) to remain part of it a little longer.

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Thank you for this. Your post reminds me that, much like nature, our progress toward recovery will be slow but steady.

Battery flavoured chips. I kid you not!
Yeah, let's bring back that flavour of licking a 9 volt battery!

LOL! I got that flavor in my kitchen junk drawer!

I'd try them if someone else paid for it. Otherwise, no. My voltmeter tongue (calibrated by years of licking batteries) and I are fine with the genuine article.

I planted this Rowan tree 5 years ago. It was a thin stick about 15cm long with a bit of root on one end. It came in the post. It's now almost as tall as the house! #PlantTrees
in reply to LillyLyle/Count Melancholia

one of my favourite trees, lucky you and lucky them.

I have a great rowan berry jelly recipe if you'd like it.

in reply to Fionnáin

@ephemeral I'd love to try your recipe. I will try making a very small batch this year.
in reply to Fionnáin

@ephemeral PS, how are you liking "Flights"? I've got it, but waiting for a chance to make a start on it.
in reply to LillyLyle/Count Melancholia

I love it but it's big so I'm taking my time (I read a few books at a time anyway so happy to move slow). I am a big fan of Olga Tokarczuk — my favourite is probably 'Primeval and Other Stories' — have you read her?

I'm moving house and just realised the book with the recipe is buried in a box so it'll have to wait til next week, sorry.

in reply to Fionnáin

@ephemeral No problem; the berries aren't quite ripe in any case!

So far I've only read her "Drive your Plows" and "The Empusium". She's so brilliant at structuring stories. I'm saving Flights and Jacob for the winter!

in reply to LillyLyle/Count Melancholia

I loved 'Drive your Plow' and haven't read 'The Empusium'. Funny you should mention her brilliant structure — I agree but 'Flights' is a very different kind of book. Ot sort of defies structure and replaces it with fragments. Hope you enjoy it as much as I am.

The scary thing about the data breach of the Tea app where people’s government IDs were leaked is that multiple governments are passing laws requiring people to provide their ID to random apps and websites to prove they’re 18.
