ABC News ; What to know about COVID variant NB.1.8.1 causing 'razor blade throat'
An Acquaintance on Pillowfort evidently contracted this. They do not live in one of the states where the spread has been reported, which means the CDC etc is being unreliable for info about it or at tracking it under the new administration.
They said :
I am counting the first day I noticed any throat irritation as day 1 of symptoms. I started Paxlovid on day 4. I am currently on day 16 and dealing with profound fatigue and muscle weakness, though my cognition is okay. I tested positive for covid on day 13. I am up to date on my vaccinations and practice hand hygiene. I got this because I did not wear a mask indoors in crowded areas (was unable to due to work). The sore throat started mild, got progressively worse, reaching its zenith on days 3.5-5 or 6. I also experienced ear popping (days 3-13), congestion (worse on days 3-6, but still present on day 16).
This is a Sneaky Variant and Can Last Weeks Even With Treatment

What to know about COVID variant NB.1.8.1 causing 'razor blade throat'
NB 1.8.1 is allegedly causing more painful sore throats in some patients.Mary Kekatos (ABC News)
This article made me angry for days when I was copyediting it. But I couldn’t talk about it because it hadn’t been published yet. Now I can. And it’s open-access so you can all read it.
Global health institutions allowed COVID-19 vaccinations to be locked up by patents. Moderna showed they could transfer their manufacturing methodologies to factories in places like South Africa. But those factories were forced to send doses to Europe and North America, while most Africans did not get COVID vaccinations.
There is a different model of medication manufacturing and distribution that is used with AUDS retrovirals for equitable distribution. It could have been used for COVID vaccines. But it wasn’t.And the same thing is now happening with Mpox.

Random reminder that #BillGates is the reason why AstraZeneca #COVID vaccine is patent-encumbered:
wired.com/story/opinion-the-wo…
> Gates bragged about convincing Oxford University not to open-license its vaccine. Gates leveraged his $750 million donation to the university for vaccine research—even though its vaccine was developed in a publicly funded lab. Eventually, Oxford sold the sole right of production to AstraZeneca, with no guarantee of low prices and an extraordinary opportunity for profit.
"Oof, it's so painful!"
"Do you mean pain from Long Covid symptoms? Or painful grief from losing family and friends to Covid?"
"No, I mean attacks from folks who say I'm contributing to disability and death by doing nothing to stop the spread of Covid!"

We need to talk about #Covid & #LongCovid . As this comic points out, many people got the wrong message from the pandemic & this wasn't an accident. There was an organized effort to spread disinformation. It was profitable for individuals & social media companies.
Health #disinformation on #socialmedia needs to be fixed, because it's killing people.

Hydroxychloroquine could have caused 17,000 deaths during #COVID, study finds
The anti-malaria drug was prescribed to some patients hospitalized with COVID-19 during the first wave of the pandemic, "despite the absence of evidence documenting its clinical benefits," now, researchers have estimated that some 16,990 people in 6 countries — France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Turkey and the U.S. — may have died as a result.

The Economist used global excess deaths to arrive at the true death toll from the pandemic with a 95% confidence interval.
"Although the official number of deaths caused by #COVID19 is now 7m, our single best estimate is that the actual toll is 27.5m people. We find that there is a 95% chance that the true value lies between 17.8m and 30.8m additional deaths."

Just got my COVID booster and everything hurts. But what hurts worse was the pharmacist telling me that she’s had to turn people away WHO WANTED THE SHOT because their insurance providers refuse to cover it (manufacturers are charging ~$120).
If your insurance provider won't cover your booster (or if you don't have insurance) the CDC's Bridge Access Program can help! It covers no-cost COVID-19 vaccines until December 31, 2024, more info here: cdc.gov/vaccines/programs/brid…
With the new #COVID vaccine approved, a reminder that we’re all indebted to the ancient & wondrous horseshoe crab.
Their blue blood contains Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL) which clumps at contact with bacterial toxins. They are caught for their blood to test sterility of medical equipment & injections.
Unfortunately the harvest is unsustainable & populations are in decline. An effective synthetic substitute has been around for 2 decades & we just need the biomedical industry to switch.
“We don’t stop hand washing because norovirus cases are down. We don’t stop wearing gloves because HIV cases are down. As a doctor, if you’re arguing that you should be able to expose patients to COVID because infection control annoys you, you should not be a doctor. Find a new career. I bet you’d love denying insurance claims. I bet you’d be a natural.”
This article is a banger.

#Heatwaves are sending people to #airconditioned indoor spaces, where Covid transmits more easily compared with outside. Summer travel alsos plays a role, as people crowd into #airports and bring germs along with them crisscrossing world. #Covid19 hospitalizations as of July 15 are up 10.3% from previous week, according to #CDC. Emergency department visits are up 7% and test positivity rose to 6.3% from 5.8%.

This paper outlines an approach ranging from population genetics to functional #genomics in which the researchers identified four important #alleles and their likely #regulatory function.
