Hello #SoftwareFreedom lovers!

On the last day of the #Nextcloud Conference, we're organising the Berliner #SoftwareFreedomDay 2024!

Come and join us for a few drinks (on us!) and a chat about the amazing things Free and Open Source have made possible.

Sad news: The Living Computer Museum in Seattle won't reopen and the collection, including the historic PDP-10, pivotal to the origins of #Emacs and #FreeSoftware, is set to be auctioned. One of their PDP-10, the second to be named AI, still has MIT's "Deactivated Property" sticker prominently displayed on the front panel. What will become of these technological treasures? It's a moment for reflection on how we preserve our digital heritage. https://www.geekwire.com/2024/seattles-living-computers-museum-logs-off-for-good-as-paul-allen-estate-will-auction-vintage-items/ #TechHistory #SoftwareFreedom

"... while you boldly [re-]create the Shared Source Initiative, ask yourself why Microsoft quietly walked away from it, and gradually learned to engage in software collaboration under licenses that are OSI approved, and ultimately free software licenses."

Why does #softwarefreedom matter?

⭐ Accessing the code, allows us to read it, understand it, and to argue in favour of a potential improvement.

⭐ Being able to to edit the code, encourages innovation, competition and autonomy. We can change parts of a program and publish the changes, benefiting users and developers.

⭐ Developers can cooperate closely and form communities around software that fits their needs. Software is used in a non- exclusive way, and serves the public good. (2/4)
