«Every winter, beekeepers from every corner of the United States descend on California to pollinate almonds. Almonds have a window of about two weeks for pollination to occur. Otherwise, the blossoms won’t turn into fruit. The demand is so high it takes upwards of two million hives, almost every commercial beehive in the country to do the job. “This is the largest managed pollination event on earth,” explains John Miller … .»

I came across a rather unusual #bee on my oregano today, which I couldn't ID. Does anyone know what it is?

Btw: the bees and butterflies love the flowering oregano.

This bee was crawling into one of these trumpet shaped flowers after another. I finally decided to aim at the flower it had just climbed into, then wait for it to leave and see if I could catch it. Amazingly, it worked!

This year we have many #umbels starting to bloom from various #Allium #plants, such as #leeks and #SpringOnions. In previous years there were perhaps only one or two. #Bees and #Wasps of several varieties seem to be enjoying the food on offer. In a few days time, I hope the #flowers will be teeming with more as they fully open up.

The #Garden at Chillerspace, Part 3

I already did a lot of research on which domestic plants are needed to protect #Endangered #Pollinators like some #Butterflies and #Bees and I ordered lots of seeds.

Apparently on one site I put a plant instead of seeds in my cart, so now I already have a hemp-agrimony (Eupatorium cannabinum) next to the pond.

Many #Butterfly and #Moth species that are rare in the area and some of which are strictly protected in Vienna are specialized on sucking nectar from hemp-agrimony, so I'm very much looking forward to when it will bloom.

I'll soon write up more info about the plant here:

https://write.privacytools.io/chillerspace/the-garden#HempAgrimony

Today I also planted some seeds and seed-mixes. Others aren't supposed to be planted before August. Anyways next year there should be a lot more butterflies, moths, bees and other useful insects in the garden. 😀

The Plan for the #Garden at ChillerSpace, Part 1

I want this garden to be a refuge for #Endangered species, by reintroducing more domestic plants that are endangered and/or that are food sources for endangered animals.

I'll start with #WildFlowers that are nectar sources for pollinators, especially #Bees and #Butterflies.

I found a list of butterflies that are highly endangered and protected with priority in #Vienna (it's in German, but there is a list of Latin names):

https://www.wien.gv.at/umweltschutz/naturschutz/biotop/schmetterling-kartierung.html

Next I'll research which domestic plants these species like the most as nectar sources and what their caterpillars eat.

I suspect the best way to get more of the plants I want is to stop watering an mowing (parts of) the lawn.

The bees are so happy in our garden . All the holes in the rose leaves have been cut by bees! We only have 10 in the bee house, we must have a bazillion living in nooks in or under the shed.

Nice pics but of bees, so marked as sensitively case people don’t like bees. #smallstories #bees

Last pictures of today's walk on Himmelswiese are of #Bees.

I haven't identified the species yet, but I'd say the most identifiable feature is how they raise their butts into the air while sucking nectar.

Experiment Shows Bees Can Understand a Symbolic Language For Mathematics

A neighbour just came over to ask if I kept bees. Turns out, he thought a hive might be nearby because he's just discovered around 50 dead bees in his front garden.

I don't keep bees (maybe one day). But this is incredibly worrying. We think someone has been using chemicals which have killed them. Which is why I never use chemical in the garden.

For this many to be found, I wonder if someone does have a hive nearby?

Anyway, all very worrying.
