Emerald Social will be shutting down on July 26th, 2025
It's been great running this server for almost three years, but due to factors such as concerns about user safety in the wake of the Trump presidency and personal burnout, we cannot continue to run this instance.
We encourage admins of other servers to mark on their calendars to purge all data related to Emerald Social on that day, and for users on this server to migrate their account before July 26th.
Our instance domain, emeraldsocial.org will expire on July 26th, 2025.
Since I will be moving out of the country around that time, I'm unsure if it is worth keeping this server up myself. There are a few possible options that I'd like to propose, which will be decided via poll (both local and remote users may take part in this decision, since it will still affect them regardless):
1. Shut down the server
If this option is picked, I will announce the shutdown of Emerald Social on March 26th, where as per commitment 4 of the Mastodon Server Covenant this counts as three months of advance warning in case of shutting down. This will give users a reasonable amount of time to move to a new server and back up their data.

The Future of Emerald Social

2. Search for a new local administrator
If this option is picked, I will, after the poll is finished, immediately start looking for a new person to run the server, who will have access to the domain as well as all other data and information necessary to run the server. I will still retain the hardware, so this new server administrator would need to provide their own hardware or VPS so that I can transfer all server data. I would also expect no changes to moderation policy as part of the agreement between myself and this new admin for this transfer.
3. Continue running the server myself
If this option is picked, I will continue to run this server from my self-imposed exile, with the physical server and thus all instance data located in the European Union, and thus subject to GDPR. However, I will still migrate my personal account, @ch0ccyra1n to a new server, most likely running something other than Mastodon.
This poll is multiple choice, so you may vote for as many of the three options as you'd like, and the option with the most votes will be the future of Emerald Social.
