I definitely have a bias as a writer and a former English teacher: Replacing ignorance with pretention isn't a good trade.

Just learning that you don't have to like all art is enough. (That said, there's very little art that I don't like. What I don't like, I still generally appreciate for calling my attention to something.)

in reply to Muse

@Jay Bryant I know what you are saying! I actually approve of "I didn't understand any of it" and even "I hated it". Those are honest personal responses. The translations into art gobbledegook are hilarious, but happen far too often in the art world. The reviews that make me !

I'm extracting DNA from the legs of spiders which were euthanized by freezing in a household freezer. In almost every spider, the DNA shows a banding pattern associated with apoptosis. Why would there be so much programed cell death in the legs of spiders? Had it already happened naturally? Was it induced during the freezing process? I do not see this happening in other organisms using the same extraction procedure.

Each lane is DNA extracted from a different spider.

Happy birthday to #physicist Lise Meitner (1878-1968) who explained #nuclear #fission. She worked with chemists Hahn & Straßmann in 30s Berlin, investigating whether there were any stable elements beyond uranium. They discovered bombarding nucleus of U-235 with neutrons actually triggered it to fission, or break, into 2 nuclei of roughly half the size & some free neutrons! Hahn’s chemistry lead to startling discovery of barium,🧵

Two demonstrators with provocative signs drew a counter-protest of hundreds of students at the Stallions.

The demonstrators arrived before 12:20 p.m. and quickly had a crowd of at least 100 students surrounding them in opposition. The two demonstrators were with the Official Street Preachers, a news outlet that covers events “from a Christian perspective.” There were two signs the demonstrators held – one said “Homo sex is sin” the other said “Women are property” on the front and “Types of Property: Women, Slaves, Animals, Cars, Land etc.” on the back.

Re: this:

I’m probably preaching to the choir here, but now is a very important time for Puerto Ricans to recognize the privilege we have in the larger LatAm community, especially when we live in the mainland, and turn that awareness not into guilt or shame or anger about anyone trying to make you feel bad, but into pure unfiltered solidarity with all other vulnerable LatAm “cousins” who have to struggle more than we do with things like language and citizenship and all the things that stuff entails.

I look forward to my community showing up for each other in the coming years, and to show up for our cousins.

Maybe stay in the next couple of months by making some coquito and connecting with your LatAm neighbors. You know we love making coquito for others. #PuertoRico

It was sitting in my queue for a bit, but I finally got around to listening to this discussion between @ntnsndr & @gleemie about his new (open-access) book Governable Spaces. It seemed an especially good moment to reconnect with ideas of how we can better work together, especially online.

#Mastodon, we have a troll problem.

Increasingly I discover Russian sympathisers and trolls who reply to my posts with content I cannot see. I only discover these replies because other users react to them.

Attached is an example where @Gurre replies to a troll (pic 1), but I cannot scroll upwards and see the troll's post.

This seems to allow an attacker to attach content to my posts, without me being able to see it and block him.

I have seen this exploit a number of times.

@Gargron.

am I the only one who is bothered by the ongoing trend of (even indie) developers not shipping a native linux client and relying on proton instead? I think this has gotten worse over the last couple years...
in reply to Johannes

@itchyballs not many released Linux Native builds even to begin with, and Proton does 99% of the time result in a click and play experience, it's only a problem if you're blinded by platform executable ideology

most gamers don't and shouldn't care

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

maybe you are right. But when I want to buy elsewhere (like gog) I don't have a nice way to play on linux. This was the case with the latest title from frictional games for example (the first time they did not ship a linux client). That is why I still appreciate native ports.
But as you said most people probably shouldn't/don't care.
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

I care. And frankly, I'm just especially tired of being told that I'm not allowed to care.
in reply to Missingno. 🔜 FF2025

@missingno @itchyballs no one is saying you can’t, just that as a gamer 99% of people (me included) care if it works and if it’s supported

Lots of Native games had support entirely removed - so in the end it matters little

Ran my way back from work at 3AM to streak out Archaea cells from a very generous collaborator. First round of plates are already cooking in the incubator - once we have data we'll know something about conserved genomic architecture dating back 250 million years. Exciting.

#microbiology #archaea

in reply to naturepoker

@STCmicrobeblog cool! I had an experimental evolution idea with haloarchaea to see of their genomes would get larger. Bc they are polyploid i thought they would be a good system for promoting duplications, etc. Haven't had a chance to start it, though...
in reply to Frank Aylward

@foaylward @STCmicrobeblog yeah polyploidy in Archea was always tricky for me (on genome asm end). The whole lot's curiously understudied (IMHO, relatively speaking) I think. Hoping the long-read closed genomes and methylation data we're aiming for can aid other researchers!

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

Just a heads up about the Mega Drive/Genesis Collection, unless there are region differences etc. they should come with the ROMs themselves in a folder called "uncompressed ROMs" in the "Sega Classics" folder. Which *should* work just fine in emulators.
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

on the one hand: why?? On the other hand: we’re all playing this emulated anyways, right?
