Funded by the Canada Counsel for the Arts, I’m researching Friedrich Dulon and Maria Theresia Von Paradis, both 18th century European musicians renowned in their time, and both Blind. I’m looking for info about a German translator and writer of the time, Pfeffel, who was also Blind. I’d love to find some of his fables in English. Dulon met and admired him, and Leopold Kozeluch created a secular cantata for Maria Theresia von Paradis, setting Pfeffel's German text ("Ich war ein kleines Würmchen") to music. If anyone who likes digging and is multi-lingual could uncover this piece of music or his fables in any form accessible to an English speaker, I’d love to be able to incorporate it into story writing, storytelling, or even singing. As a Blind person myself I'm really interested in bringing their work to life for a modern audience, but I'm mono-lingual, and a terrible researcher. Please boost for reach.

me, some guy i met in uni who calls himself Gibby "The Splice" Ronnalds, and a random executive from a AAA publisher who decided to give us $15,000 based on a newspaper ad we bought as a joke. we're given twelve weeks to make the top down shooter we promised we'd been able to do. all i have is a C compiler i got on a floppy from a garage sale, and all gibby has is an amiga with a cracked copy of the ultimate soundtracker. we don't have an artist, but i notice my mum's cross stitching patterns look remarkably similar to pixel art, and i give her a stack of grid paper and a box of coloured pencils and tell her to have at it.
the game is looking to be pure unadulterated dogshit right up until nine days before release, where a bug that causes the AI planes to go hyperspeed inspires us to add a "nitrous" mechanic. we rename Flyin' High with Gibby to Aeronauts! and rework the entire game from a WWII dogfighter to a racer. the publisher is fur

this post made me think of a book I read recently called "tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow". It was pretty good and is all about game devs. Not the most amazing book ever but it had a lot of good moments and has parts that hearken back to a simpler time in computing

@neauoire Strong disagree with this take. I really like the technical foundations of ATProto, and there are already several interoperable alternatives to Bsky for the AppView. More European initiatives that use the protocol without using Bsky only strengthen that open source and open standard (being handled by the IETF) ecosystem. I’m a pretty enthusiastic computer toucher and self host a fair amount of shit, and I’ve never had nearly that many terabytes. Albeit I’m not a plex guy, but again I’m surrounded by computing enthusiasts, many self hosters, and probably know just a handful of serious plex people and I don’t think even they command that much storage.

Which brings me to…I just don’t actually find it very technically interesting. Albeit that’s more from a philosophy perspective than a technical one, I’m not exactly a distributed protocol person. I don’t think I have anything interesting to say on that you’ve probably not heard before, it’s just not the flavour of “decentralised” I want to see succeed. I think it intrinsically favours business operators, rather than communities and individuals. In a tech industry (and world) that is increasingly concentrating power in the hands of the few, I’m just not interested. There’s space in the world for more than one protocol though. And I’d love to be wrong, maybe I will be.
And on that point, I come back to your toot rather than the post: “more European initiatives that use it without using Bsky only strengthen that open source and open standard” just leaves me asking why? Why do we want to strengthen it? Why do we want to shore up this cryptobro VC vehicle? Why is this the best use of our institutions and our energy? I’m not saying it’s *not*, but I haven’t seen a genuine answer for why it is, other than people preferring the experience of Bluesky the App to Mastodon. Finally on this I just think “we have to buy into this thing to make sure it’s not shit” is just not very compelling, maybe it’s just that it’s a tactic beloved by a kind of crypto and LLM pusher. The messaging needs work.

But it's a good question, so until now my expectation for decentralization for something like bluesky, was merely, can you basically just spin a server, generate your DID and hop on. Which I thought was just around the corner. But I hadn't realized that not only can you not join in without asking bluesky, the solution is more bureacratic than that, it involves something akin to a domain name authority.
So, that infrastructure will NEVER be open, as the network grows, the initial payload will explode in size and get rid of smaller replication services until only amazon scale services are even capable to "mine", and so you've got 3 new arbiters that tells us who gets to participate and who doesn't, and you can be sure that Bezos and Elon are going to be on that board. It sounds to me like an awful deal, it feels more like picking a Battle Net server than a federation, to use Joe's metaphore.

it depends, I find it's definitely worth it, not just for my own benefit as a commonplace book, Rek and I get weekly emails from folks who found something obscure they were looking for on one of our websites and are grateful for us documenting this or that.
Maybe your interests have shifted too, I find so much joy looking at people's websites. Somehow, against all odds, from where I'm standing, I think I know more people today with daily/weekly updated websites than I did 10 years ago..
oh I definitely enjoy websites like those of yours and of folk in the webring. I also still like the idea of maintaining a space in which to house works and collected knowledge; but then it pretty much just sits there, gathering dust, becoming insignificant in a way.
not that my goal is to garner popularity. I don't have the words yet to clearly communicate how it feels to exist right now. the closest I can compare it to would be something like camping in a once gorgeous and serene spot but now there's glampers and instagrammers all over the place. and to sort of stand out and be heard, you'd have to have already been quite established, or be forced to resort to the tactics of content creators (which I find unsettling)
it's a fine line between hoarding knowledge, and making a living document that'll leads to anything. I might have changed my mind a hundred times about this, but there is so little direct tangible returns to having a personal wiki(other than the gratefulness of strangers), that it might as well be a marvelous pursuits, if it's personal enough anyways.
But there's something to be said about leading by example, somehow by making a place I enjoy online, it inspired others to make a place of their own, and in turn I get to visit. Which benefits me almost directly as browsing personal websites has got to be one of my favourite pass-times.

But there is much less noise and competition in the sidelines, I find comfort in that.
@neauoire I like to imagine my website as a little sketch book of words. Sometimes the sketches are just for me, sometimes they are for sharing, and then once they are in my little book I can show them around whenever the topic comes up.
I don't even broadcast all the changes I make to it. There are many pages that just appear without any sort of forshadowing. Pages like my bookmarks just updating whenever.
I think you have good connections and with a community that's much closer. I toyed with the idea of becoming an established artist and making a career out of it, on and off in the past few years, and that was one of the reasons I started my website to begin with.
while I did meet interesting people through my site, it ultimately didn't really do much for my career pursuits. it doesn't help that I'm quite isolated where I'm at (ironic, given it's a city of millions).
I've secretly envied those who seem to be doing quite well in that regard and I've wondered how they got there: consistency perhaps but for how long, or some stroke of luck. the road more traveled of promoting oneself isn't at all enticing though.
to me, social media killed the idea of having a portfolio. then AI and vibe coding killed whatever programming and gamedev projects I've been planning. the earliest iteration of my site had short stories, but now I don't see myself wanting to get back to writing.
I still have art, but there's nothing to be done with it; and so I'm stuck on what to do, withering in the meantime
