I'm always a little uncomfortable about this issue. The UK used to be covered by woodland but most of them have been cleared over the last centuries leaving farmland and a biodiversity desert.
Malaysia where I am at the moment went through mass clearances for rubber production and now they are mostly cleared along with more rainforest for oil palms.
I suspect the alternative would be clearance for other forms of agriculture which is probably even worse.
@X31Andy This argument fails to account for a major issue - #extinction risk. Other crops can be grown on land far less biodiverse than #palmoil. Palm oil can only be grown on razed and destroyed tropical rainforest, where the highest number of animals and plants live. That's ONE THING. Another is that there is now #palmoil made from microbes, carbon dioxide, fungi and algae being generated and commercialised. This is made in a lab and requires ZERO DEFORESTATION to produce. I am calling upon our patriot storytellers to join me for a talk on Hopecore worldbuilding. What would a United States worth living in look and feel like? What would we need to do to make it a reality? What national and cultural changes would we need to pursue? And how do we build these ideas into stories that inspire?

Wrote a blog post, instead of another GitLab Snippet, on upgrading our two #Tor relays to use the new Happy Families feature that was released yesterday in Tor 0.4.9.5. All in all, it was extremely uncomplicated to set up, and maybe that can encourage more people to try it out sooner rather than later! 😎
Awesome to see more operators upgrading to #Tor 0.4.9.5, but also to see the number of Happy Families increasing! Over the weekend, the following has happened:
- We have gone from 185 to 952 unique relays uploading Happy Families keys. Of those, 104 are Happy Families only.

My #nextcloud setup needs some rework. After seeing latest video from @nextcloud I am thinking about a new instance of my year-old current one. There is no real need, but I would like to clean up my installation with newest architecture and maybe start integrating talk what I missed all the times. What is the recommended installation method nowadays? AIO? Apache, mariadb, php vanilla? Any hints welcome. Its a two user and some guests install. Data privacy is highest requirement.

Contra el mito de que rompían máquinas por miedo al progreso, los luditas del siglo XIX resistían un sistema que usaba la tecnología para destruir sus medios de vida. No era odio a las máquinas, era odio a las relaciones de poder que las máquinas imponían.
A menudo se tacha a los luditas ingleses de tecnófobos chiflados. En realidad, se trataba de un movimiento obrero premarxista que daba prioridad a las personas y a la naturaleza sobre la propiedad privada.
tengo bastantes dudas de que se pueda equiparar el avance técnico contra el que estaban los luditas con la amenaza de la IA. Lo primero al fin y al cabo liberaba de trabajos manuales penoso y eso puede ser bueno, lo segundo nos libera de pensar y eso se está demostrando que no es nada bueno.
se podría aplicar tb al uso de rrss privativas? cuando argumentamos como dañan el tejido socioafectivo, manipulan y degradan la salud mental de muchas personas, infinitas veces sacan la palabra tecnofobia o antidesarrollo para desacreditarlo... cuando solo señalamos como esa forma de usar la tecnologia se usa para favorecer el status quo y perpetuar violencias.. Por no hablar q considerar tecnologia solo a máquinas y lo occidental nos parece terriblemente colonial y patriarcal..
las (no tan adecuadamente llamadas) IA benefician enormemente de las estructuras que impulsaron anteriormente las redes sociales y estas tecnologías digitales anteriores, etc. Por eso para nosotres el elemento clave de la discusión estaría en las inequitativas relaciones de poder desde las que nacen y profundizan.
@ColectivoLoairas p. d.: de hecho muchas veces en los artículos o publicaciones que escribimos solemos llamar tecnologías digitales, justo con el ánimo de no invisibilizar las muchas otras formas de tecnologías existentes. Seguramente alguna vez lo omitimos y aún así se mantiene en la base de los que hacemos.
I love how these pretty obscure books seem to have a brief moment after their publication, and then their popularity must wane a little. It's a pity they don't stamp them any more.
Very sad to see how AI kills everything nice. But instead of murdering terminators, it is killing via some AI bros that want to boost their GitHub stats (or whatever the reason for their PRs is).
it's about time for them to limit PRs to humans-only and forbid the use of AI in either writing code or text.
let's be real, whoever wants to contribute will take an extra step to learn how the code works (or be open to it), instead of just submitting AI slop. they will be interested in writing things themselves, instead of using AI.
