my question is a bit dumber, and I didn't see where that page covered it...
I have proton. I have lots of games that work through it...but Civ is the Linux port and I couldn't figure out how to get the windows version instead.
I'm using the flatpak version of Steam and did not need any workarounds to start Civ VI (v1.0.1.104).
I've actually had a much better experience on my system with all the games in my library using the flatpak version...
