Privacy Considerations for 4 types of people

blog.devgenius.io/privacy-sett…

in reply to The New Oil

Frankly, this is a pretty low-quality article. There are a lot of typos and grammar errors, and much of the advice is questionable at best, like recommending people keep location tracking on. It's also unclear to me how the "four types of people" are actually represented in each section. I find most of what you share insightful and helpful so this surprised me.

@rolltime Agreed, It excludes teenagers in some categories and lacks depth.

Electronics question – LED resistors, boosts welcome

I pulled apart an LED bulb. I can't remember the lumens but think it was 200lm. I want to use the individual LEDs with an Arduino but don't know what resistor to use with each as I'm not sure how big a punch each one packs. The resistor for all 36 tiny LEDs is in the second photo – looks like [brown black black black red] to my eyes.

Any idea how I can calculate the resistor needed for one bulb please?

Did you get an answer? The basic idea is to use Ohm's law with a twist. The voltage drop across the LED is constant and depends on the color. Say you apply 5V to an LED with a series current limiting resistor, if the LED is green it will drop 2.2V. that leaves 2.8V dropped across the resistor.

V=IR, V/I=R if you want 100mA to flow thru the circuit take 2.8/0.1 and you get 28 Ohms.

It is always a good idea to use a current limited power supply for testing.

I'm not an EE so only know enough ot cause trouble. Corrections welcome.

phew! Oh yes, thank you for checking and for the thoughful reply.

Many answers in the replies said exactly this (note the post was nearly a year ago...I have since wired it all up, completed the artwork and exhibited it at three venues!) but much appreciated for taking the time.

Thank you for your kind reply. I'm still very new to Mastodon. It seems that the the number next to the reply arrow is not the number of replies. But if I touch the test of your post I'm taken to a different view where I see all the replies. That is confusing.
in reply to George Albercook

Electronics question – LED resistors, boosts welcome

yes there are some things here that take some getting used to, and a few small bugs because Mastodon is non-commercial and it is up to users, not teams of paid testers, to report errors.

There are also other reasons you might not see replies on an old post. Eg:

1) Many people automatically delete old posts
2) Many people reply privately
3) Some people's instances may not be 'federated' with your instance

in reply to Fionnáin

Electronics question – LED resistors, boosts welcome

the third example above is one that can be hard to understand as a new user, but becomes easier over time. There are plenty of explanations online about federation but I learned mostly by just interacting on here and picking up meaning slowly.

And welcome to Mastodon!

interesting. So I don't see any replies. Do you know why?

The Wednesday Adams series on Netflix looks dope.

Can't wait for it to be canceled regardless of the high praises by a CEO drunk out of his mind. And replaced by yet another cooking contest show for people with no personality.

"Self-Hosting Is the Ultimate Privacy Power Move"

When you use a third-party service for your needs, whatever those needs may be, you’re always taking on a certain degree of privacy risk.

I don't see many tutorials on securing your self-hosted Nextcloud service. I love next cloud but I'm always wondering if I'm safe running in on the internet wasteland.

I can definitely see the appeal to self hosting a lot of things, maybe if I ever have enough space for that sort of thing I'll look into it again some day.

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide on Steam Deck

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

If it works well on the Steam deck does this mean it will usually work well on desktop Linux with Steam?

I did it. I made music on a TI-83 graphing calculator. This is insane. Massive shout-out to @jefftheworld for letting me know this exists. Man was this a pain to get up and running. I still run into a problem where it only plays the first note and then nothing else. I find if I leave row play mode off it doesn't do that but I'm stumped as to what it could be causing it. The only thing that solves it is reinstalling. Yikes! Well, it works. For now. Gotta get the emulator up and running so I have a more reliable platform to work with the tracker. Then I can port the ROM over to the calculator.

Hello professors on here: this semester we've seen a tidal wave of academic misconduct (copy and paste plagiarism, sharing answers). What strategies do you use that *work* to deal with this (not including giving 0s)? very cool. What sort of stuff had you made with aquarelle/printmaking prior to this work?
in reply to Danny (he/they)

@danwchan Thank you! This was my first go at it. To be honest, at the time, I didn't even know that it was an actual technique with a name. I was just making it up as I went along! I didn't have any lino to hand so used some thick card instead. It's more absorbent and gives different printing effects.

I got commissioned by #FEMSmicro to make a visual identity for their blog using this technique some time later...

in reply to Open Science ✅

Thanks, I believe this really sheds light on the rush to publish as soon as you get results.
Unfortunately often those results are not reproducible due to how the code is written, which is often specific to the machine of the researcher.

I admit I'm also guilty of this, trying to become better and placing more care in the code.

in reply to Open Science ✅

If I get 10 guesses for criteria to assess code quality, I don't think I would guess 1 out of those 3 criteria, tops.

I understand the code quality standards out of the software community may be low, but precisely for that reason it's scary to see code quality evaluated in terms of extensive annotations, no repetition and markup for formatting. People may start thinking that's what they should do... 🤔

in reply to Peter Tennant, PhD

@pwgtennant I can agree with that. I think the inspection tools have a big effect. I think that if code has been sighted by more than one person, preferably by an outsider and along with some useful comments, it will be comprehensible to most readers.
in reply to Open Science ✅

@openscience @pwgtennant
I don't know what the right answers are but this feels like an enormously healthy conversation to be having.

Best practice for research/analytical code may or may not reflect best practice for code in industry. A process to get consensus around what research code best practice is seems valuable.

I agree with Peter - I think readability is more important in research/analytical code. Efficiency is often less important (at least I hope so!).

*yodeling intensifies*

I dunno, if I were a wresler I would pick some god damn Yodeling as a theme song.

Imagine: Beefy Mcbeef Pants enters the arena with heavy metal. John Cena does the whole patriot stuff.

Random guy appear in pajamas, eating shreaded cheese, Yodeling blasting. John Cena starts sweating, other wreslers also have never heard of guy before and don't know how to react.

Pipe organs are officially the most badass instrument human kind has ever made.

If aliens came to earth and we were to show them how we make nice "beeps and boops" we should show them a guitar as the "simple folk instrument".

And then show them a fucking HUGE pipe organ the size of a room, the kind that makes you feel your ribs vibrating with the sound.

That'll make them impressed.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @GreatDismal@mastodono.social

At least on my Mastodon instance[1] that does not work; copying the text and pasting it into the search box doesn't find anything.

Instead, I need to right click the linked text, then choose "Copy Link" and paste the link into the search box -- that is, without the "https://" part it doesn't work.

Is that a bug I should file? Not sure, I'm a n00b too...

Me when my former students ask about grad school

To be clear I don't think scholarship or learning are scams, but academia as it is now - depending on abusive labor practices in the name of what?
That's a scam

in reply to cyborgneticz

they provide an institutional affiliation for when that is useful, a community to do scholarly things with others (talks and writing time), and grant management (with a lower overhead than a traditional institution). The way they're organised also interests me with a minimal hierarchy and some structures to encourage self organisation.
in reply to Danny (he/they)

@danwchan
Thanks so much for sharing!

I took a look at the webpage and it definitely seems like one of these things that goes into my bottomless pit of "it would be so cool to be involved in this, but".

The good part is, from time to time one can actually dive into one's pit and do one of the things.

in reply to Alejandro Gaita-Ariño

@agaitaarino happy to share! At it's baseline ronin just requires an application, orientation, and a yearly renewal. After that initial barrier, participation in their systems is whatever you make of it. I'm still feeling out how I want to participate with the organisation but let me know if you have any questions.
