Patch from Scratch // Packie Store Tootsie Roll

a patch from scratch. some narration at the beginning. full patch can begin to be heard around 8 minutes.

the title comes from driving by an old packie store [liquor store] that i was brought to regularly as a child and seeing it was now permanently closed. one of the clerks that worked there when i was growing up used to give me a tootsie roll when she'd see me. please don't bring a child with you when you're making a packie run.

Steam Deck OS 3.4 Preview adds support for 8BitDo Ultimate Wireless controller dongle gamingonlinux.com/2022/12/stea… #Linux #SteamDeck #SteamOS

I was surprised at how well the PS5 controller just...worked! I thought about getting one of the 8BitDo controllers, but they were the same price as a PS5 controller...so I just got one of those.

if activitypub actually becomes a big thing, using mastodon "lists" will become more important to curate your feed.

imagine if you had old twitter (pre-algorithmic timeline) and a webcomic, mixed into 1 feed. you would basically just have old twitter. the posts would just drown it out.

@Simon Ashcroft I don't think this is an Australian photo. For one thing the warning sign is on the wrong side of the road, for another we don't have many chihuahuas here.

Aha - you have specialised local knowledge.

Please apologise on my behalf to your local owls.

Google are now processing Stadia Hardware refunds gamingonlinux.com/2022/12/goog… #Google #Stadia #CloudGaming
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

Have they said whether they'll patch the controllers to have bluetooth support? It's pretty irresponsible that they aren't unlocking that feature, as otherwise those controllers will just all becoming trash once the service is gone.
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

I bought the bundle with a controller and chromecast for around $25 about a year ago, simply because it was cheaper than buying just the chromecast. Never touched stadia, and now I basically got a USB controller and a 4k chromecast for free.
I'm curious what their losses will look like come end of fiscal year.

Run Linux inside TF2 and then run a Windows VM inside that Linux instance. Super meta.

@John Hummel We've been getting companies in the US hiring people in Australia for computing work, including AI development.
in reply to Muse

Thanks, @Muse. It's tempting. But my kind of AI is weird, much like this architecture. Maybe I would fit in there.

Everytime I hear / see someone mentioning hive I think of an old social media platform called "hyves" from the early 2010s. Those were the good times. But then facebook

@Seb_ I think of the Hive crypto currency which was also entirely based around social media

NVIDIA puts out Security Bulletin for various driver issues gamingonlinux.com/2022/12/nvid… #NVIDIA #Drivers #Security
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

Oh brother, nvidia-340 is borked on some of the systems I tried installing it on, and there's a launchpad PPA for a legacy version of that driver, but I bet it's bugged.

Have you guys ever went a little overboard?

It was supposed to just Illustrate in B&W the first scene of the novel, but then I liked the composition, "I'll just add the solid colors", "I'll just shade it a bit.

I'm actually proud of how it turned out, even though you can see I wasn't sweating too much on detailing the background. That cop car looks a bit f***up.

I might turn it into the cover page later.

This is a question the entire fediverse needs to wrangle with. On the one hand, advertising has had an unquestionably negative impact on the Internet. On the other, these services DO cost money to run. While in a perfect world donations would cover everything, the reality is most users of the platforms/communities aren't paying to support them. If we don't all figure this out, it's going to be hard for the fediverse to scale. Would love to hear ideas in the comments!

Please forward.

There is conversation about a proposed gathering of collectively/cooperatively/democratically run Mastodon instances.

As @natematias has pointed out, this conversation needs to start with #bipoc, #lgbtqia+, and other people who have been (and continue to be) attacked in social media spaces.

If you are running a #Black, #BIPOC, #LGBTQIA+ or other instance, does a gathering of collective/cooperative instances seem useful to you?

It's a radio week for me...

I set up a #libreelec media player with a Raspberry Pi 3 and a touchscreen as a home music and radio hub. The aim was to stop using a laptop for media, while keeping audio accessible for the people who share this space, including visitors. My compliments to libreelec on this, it's very user friendly.

So a question: I love radio but I've never used internet radio much. Any recommendations (for eclectic music particularly)? Will try anything...

in reply to Fionnáin

Will second SomaFM, there's a Kodi app you can install to get their channels. Secret Agent is my current favourite, strong Bond vibes with the occasional cringey Bond quote.

I like psy*radio which you can get via the Radio app. (I think search for psyradio in the app). I find all their channels great music for working too, but Chill is prolly best for keeping everyone happy.
