I had a really disappointing experience working with the developer of a game once and it's mostly turned me off to "auteur*" developers.
The game is called "One Hour One Life" and I think it's still around it's a survival MMO made by this one very talented guy.
And early in the life of the game, I thought it could be HUGE. But you've probably never heard of it. This is the story of why. ๐งต
*projects where all changes are made by one guy
Anyway the number of players shrank and the game faded away. It never was the next big thing. It is, and remains an excellent experience. (Weekends and holidays are a great time to play since there are more people on the server. )
(Sometimes even enough people to make it feel alive again.)
But, the big take away from my story, is that I think it's nearly impossible to be a creator AND do a good job managing a forum of users with demands and complaints.

We are emotionally connected to the things we make, even code! It hurts when someone says that our creations aren't "right" -- even if they are as kind as they can possibly be as they say it.
Creators benefit from having help with this step in the process. By working in groups I think things just tend to go better in the long run... even if getting off the ground can take more effort.
