There's still nowhere to legally buy Unreal Tournament now right since Epic nuked them all a year ago right? How sad.

@ephemeral Interesting that hot water bottles aren't prevalent outside of a small group of countries. Wonder how that correlates to tea drinking, or having a kettle ie having warm water regularly rebrewed as a matter of course despite "industrialization"?

@mrvi I wondered the same thing. I had never really thought about it before, but was a bit surprised when I read that.

might want to try this super weird edition of Quake II for Linux, then!
It includes a couple of level packs and you have to compile it all!
I never found much information about it online, it's probably rare to find.

Digital Care and Philanthropy: A report-as-invitation for 'philanthropic institutions and the ecosystem of digital care to reflect upon alternatives, ways out, and paths of cooperation that may guide and strengthen the care practices in the universe of Human Rights' through use of digital technologies.

Great report and perspectives that will be easy to share with non-technical organisations.

Credit to @varia for the event 'Sometimes Not Available', where this came up.

One of the recommendations:

'External and long-term consultancies in digital care are important to ensure that the organizations enter a process of building a new institutional culture. And structuring an internal team dedicated to the technology and security issues may directly contribute to the consolidation and sustainability of such institutional culture of digital care.' I worry about the next Fedora KDE release, I don't expect all of these problems to be resolved by then and if they're not you're going to have a lot of forum posts from artists on your hands. reddit.com/r/kde/comments/18ggโ€ฆ
in reply to Brodie Robertson

technicaly speaking they can just not upgrade to fedora 40, fedora 39 (which, does ship with X11) is supported utill 07/Dec/2024. Hopefully the problems will be fixed by then.

I'm mostly worried about the fact that many NVIDIA users, including myself, who use Kinoite or the KDE Plasma spin, may have to switch to another distro because Kwin crashes when using the Wayland session.

I've been doing consistent weekly meal planning for 2 months now and it's been really nice! Just been thinking about what to have/make, buy groceries just for that, etc. When someone in my family asks what we're having for dinner, I can answer them right away. And if we want to shuffle things around, it's easy enough to do, too (with consideration given to the groceries we bought).

It's massively cut down on takeout and I've been having so much fun cooking!

Is this cooking-for-the-week meal planning, or just planning ahead and cooking day-of?

My partner has tried cooking ahead and it didnโ€™t work, but she manages to cook pretty regularly these days (and well!). My mother taught her how to cook a few Puerto Rican dishes ๐Ÿ˜ป But not mofongo, which was my late auntโ€™s thing, and Iโ€™ve been kinda missinโ€™ that latelyโ€ฆ maybe sheโ€™ll want to learn a recipe ๐Ÿ˜„

Hyprland is getting very close to overtaking Sway in Github stars, for it's time Sway was a great project and now it serves as a great reference implementation of wlroots for others to use but I think Hyprland is much better project for most users
in reply to Brodie Robertson

Yeah but when I tried using mods on hyprland it was a little clunky. I used notify-send as a workaround to show the mode I was using. I don't know if that was changed

Also, the workspace ordering was clunky, especially with non-numbered workspaces

โ€˜Tis the season to remember that all of Santaโ€™s reindeer are female.

You see, males drop their antlers after the Autumn mating season, so since the worldโ€™s most celebrated reindeer are always depicted with spectacular antlers, we must assume that Olโ€™ Saint Nickโ€™s entire intrepid team - including Rudolph - are female. #science #Christmas

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

No, itโ€™s magical, theyโ€™re just reindeer, thatโ€™s it.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

they operate in a time bubble so may not be subject to conventional seasons. This is assuming they are real reindeer and not cybernetic.

Hmz... Forums (this counts also for reddit) acts more like Hospitals. You join them if you have some problem. Sure there are also people who work there or visit for fun, but the majority is not. I'm not sure anyone would be proud of substantial growth in a hospital...

Well done! Though, I find the nearly 25k followers here, in Mastodon/fediverse, much more impressive and nice to have in the long term! Both communities of course do not search the same things here and there, but Aaron Swartz is not with us anymore and regarding privacy, Reddit is... What it is.

Reading an otherwise excellent book, โ€œPolarized America,โ€ published in 2006. But this line strikes me as a bit naive through the lens of December 2023:

โ€œthere is simply no question to us that the United States is a far more tolerant place [than] it was fifty years ago.โ€

The authors couldnโ€™t have imagined what - and who - was coming. #politics

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

His example of it being less bigotry between "white ethnic groups" is, uh... telling.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

This was in 2006. Did they forget the rampant Islamophobia from 2001-2003?

Critical insight from Bruce Schneier:

"Any AI regulations should place restrictions on those people and corporations. Otherwise the regulations are making the same category error Iโ€™ve been talking about. At the end of the day, there is always a human responsible for whatever the AIโ€™s behavior is. And itโ€™s the human who needs to be responsible for what they doโ€”and what their companies do."
schneier.com/blog/archives/202โ€ฆ

in reply to Nathan Schneider

@mia This cannot be emphasized enough. Actual human accountability is the absolute minimum requirement for any baseline. We cannot allow companies to escape liability with a shrug.
@mia
in reply to Nathan Schneider

AI is not autonomous. Humans are the Prime Movers of AI and must be responsible for their actions.

As an occasional journalist, I just love the way Ed Yong closes his latest OpEd at NYTs & couldnโ€™t agree more. nytimes.com/2023/12/11/opinionโ€ฆ #GiftArticle #writing #journalism

โ€œJournalists can act as a care-taking profession that soothes & nurtures. We are among the only professions that can do so at a scale commensurate with the scope of the crises before us. We can make people who feel invisible feel seen. We can make everyone else look.โ€

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

This is so true - and both a blessing and a curse. Politically, the current brand of right-wing extremists (not just in the US) would still be a fringe anomaly in some dark and lonely corner of the internet, if journalists back then hadn't felt that they're a curiosity that needed to be reported on?
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

It is a beautiful piece. Shouldnโ€™t even be considered opinion, imho.
