in reply to Eugen Rochko

in reply to Eugen Rochko

82-year old Chilean, granted permanent legal residency (political asylum) by the US in 1987.

Lost his “green card”. While getting it replaced, ICE snatched him. Family couldn’t find out where he was, thought he was dead. Then they were told he was dead (anonymously? - unclear)

Instead, he had been deported. Not to Chile. To Guatemala. He’s now in a hospital there.

His fate depends on the whims of the people who sent him, people immune to the law.

"Gregor Mendel, the pioneer of modern genetics, was born #OnThisDay in 1822. His experiments with pea plants established the genetic inheritance of certain traits, and he coined the terms 'recessive' and 'dominant' to describe them."

You have been warned yet again, the US cannot be trusted...

Microsoft, under oath, admits the possibility that EU‑hosted data can be accessed by US agencies without any notifications

In sworn French‑Senate testimony, Microsoft’s legal chief for France(M. Anton Carniaux) conceded he cannot guarantee that data on French citizens stored wholly in EU Microsoft datacenters is safe from U.S. silent access and acknowledged that French or any EU authorities might not even be notified if access occurs.

Delivered under oath, this statement is an official legal recognition of the silent‑access risk inherent in relying on Microsoft’s infrastructure.

@Jodi Dry food only! Ouch! We had to take one cat off dry food because it caused bladder stones. Within one month he was in so much less pain. However, he was also REALLY grumpy about not having his beloved hard food. In the end I would give him a few pieces of kibble once a day as a treat.

Bribery is bribery. It's against the law. I suppose if you believe the vast majority of people are corruptible, then it would be reasonable to believe sortition would be corrupted. But if that's the case no government would ever be free of corruption. Rich politicians are not noble figures of high ethical standards. In which case why have a government at all? Just close it all down.
in reply to Muse

fair comment. The removal of influence (and possible bribery) is why we lock jurists away during court proceedings, so they can focus only on the evidence presented. If legislation was proposed, the sortitioned could be given pertinent information to study and closed off much the same until a decision is reached. The cost to taxpayers would be large but needn't be more than we're already paying.

Bella loves to have the inside of her hind legs scratched (look at those air biscuits! 😻). Benny loves to use me as a mobile observation platform so he can survey his kingdom.

The family of a green card holder “was told he died in ICE custody. Then they learned he’s alive — in a hospital in Guatemala, they say.”

When this is all over—and I have to believe it will be over one day—there need to be trials.

I like to measure the distance from being humane. The closer you are trying to get to that singular point, the more I like and support you.

Is This the End of Democracy?

"The warning lights are flashing. Across the globe, democratic institutions are showing cracks in their foundations—even in nations where democracy once seemed unshakable. That gnawing sense you've had that something fundamental is shifting in our political landscape? You're not alone. Citizens everywhere are questioning whether democracy as we know it can withstand the mounting pressures of polarization, inequality, and executive overreach."

in reply to Muse

Democracy in America is done, at least for the moment. Whether we can break fascism's hold in the next election is iffy, since we'll have to overcome yet more rigging of the election to do it.
in reply to Muse

Learn from our demise and may what happens to us, make your societies healthier and stronger

in reply to Nextcloud 📱☁️💻

My understanding after reading the description of the app is that the encrypted secret is stored on the server while the encryption key is embedded in the share link. Therefore your statement that "nothing is ever stored on the server" seems misleading at least if not plainly wrong.

@frisch Good catch! We have deleted that specific sentence to make sure the information is correct.

It's an all-time favorite app for a lot of Nextcloud users. 💫
