This story with Tracy Chou, an engineer who specifically works on creating tools to stifle organised harassment online, getting posts removed from mastodon.social because of "reverse sexism/racism," is maddeningly infuriating.

We know that Mastodon's flagship instances have been having issues with moderation for a while, but this seems to point that the trend has gone from "ineffective absent moderators" to "moderators protecting the feelings of white men," which I think will backfire. It also validates every criticism the fediverse receives for being a bastion of tepid, neoliberal, unexamined racism-as-reflex whiteness.

Link to Twitter: twitter.com/triketora/status/1…

To echo Tracy Chou's bannable offense: I also heavily recommend reading more books by non men, by non white people, and by non cisheterosexual people. What a violent ideology! Tabarnouche. :blobcatreeeeeee:

in reply to Gersande La Flèche

do we know yet that this was an intentional choice and not a moderating mistake made by a service that has grown tenfold in the last few weeks?
in reply to Anil

@anildash It was a mistake, the official Masto dot social Twitter explained in the answers to Chou's Tweet. twitter.com/triketora/status/1…

Eugen also messaged me to tell me that her post was flagged as antisemitic and a moderator mistakenly agreed with the report. Eugen had to actually go into the dot social database to restore the post manually after he was aprised of the situation, which I think caught his attention because it got a lot of eyeballs on it.

I still don't quite get what's going on I'm afraid. A bit of a problem since it's partly my job to keep track of fediblock from time to time. 😅

#OTD in 1969, Apollo 12 astronauts Pete Conrad and Al Bean walked out to visit the inactive Surveyor 3 spacecraft that had been on the moon since 1967; collecting its TV camera, robotic scoop, and some cables, tubing, and glass for a return to Earth.

Back on Earth, scientists were initially perplexed when they were able to grow bacteria from swabs from the Surveyor 3 camera the Apollo 12 crew brought back!

Trans journalist Parker Molloy criticized journa.host for failing to moderate transphobia: journa.host/@parker/1093663371…

Their mods responded by suspending her.

I am beginning by silencing journa.host, and I intend to upgrade this to a suspension if they don't shape up. I encourage journalists there to move servers, and if Jawns follow journalists there, you may stop seeing them.

I'll try not to discuss #fediblock too much, but this is a tough mod decision I want Jawns.club members to know about.

Going to show a little vulnerability here and share this work-in-progress.

I'm trying to put what I'd like to have as a purpose for my instance in writing.

It really sounds like a pipe dream to be honest, and I think an instance's purpose should be so clear that it can be put in a single sentence.

Does this sound like something that would be possible, interesting and doable to you?

"Es decir, la resistencia no es solo persistencia; la resistencia, en la forma en que lo estoy pensando, siempre incluye perspectiva, el medio por el cual podemos contextualizar la duda y, al darle contexto, desplazarla un poco, despejando así el lugar nuevamente para la fe sacudida. Quizás la mejor manera de pensar en la resistencia es como una fusión de perspectiva y voluntad."

in reply to Joaquín Herrero

"Which is to say, stamina is not just persistence; stamina, in the way that I’m thinking of it, always includes perspective, the means by which we can contextualize doubt and, in giving it context, displace it somewhat, thereby clearing room again for shaken faith. Maybe the best way to think of stamina is as a fusion of perspective and will."

CSS class' "icon" property "height" causing distance beween two lines in profile views

The said #CSS class .icon has a property height: 48px which with current HTML structure causes a distance between two lines when I view a remote profile (view: /contact/X or a post (view: /display/X):

I'm sure, removing height from the said CSS class won't fix it in the long run but maybe checking the HTML/div structure would.

mastodon.art has defederated from journa.host . There are a few problematic reasons, like scouring people's content to use and quote without permission, but most notably, they've used a tool developed by kiwifarms (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiwi_Far…) to scan instance blocklists . The fedi culture generally is very anti-tabloid-journalism and obviously there are concerns about privacy, but using a tool developed by known harassers for the sole purpose of harassing is over the line.
