Alaska has nearly 1 million miles of rivers, but only 10% of them are gauged, or measured.
By #TrackingWorldWater, SWOT will measure the height of surface water from space and help groups like the Alaska Department of Fish and Game better manage salmon spawning and survival.
#NASAEarth
SWOT will allow us to see Alaska’s waters in ways we haven’t before, which is important, because Alaska, being in the Arctic, is also where the U.S. is experiencing the most climate change right now.

Chained Echoes is as close as you can get to retro-styled RPG perfection
I am rarely this enthusiastic about games, especially retro-styled games because so many miss the mark in numerous ways but thankfully Chained Echoes is just brilliant.Liam Dawe (GamingOnLinux)

We (myself included) have taken this for granted for 50 years. But … Damn, we built rockets, spaceships, protective suits, & all the comm/control systems to make it work, … and then sent people to the MOON! And back!
And we did all that with the primitive computing capabilities available back then … 🤦♂️
Curious about how Moon dust feels and smells? 🌔 👃

That same semester, a grader for our Quantum Mechanics class told a different student (who submitted really long homework papers) "you aren't writing the Magna Carta."
That student turned in his next homework on a handmade "Magna Quanta" – a full length scroll with the complete text of the Magna Carta written on it and his homework solutions at the end.

#UK folks, there's a petition to keep protection of transgender people in the equality act by not amending it.
It's pretty scary being #trans in this country at the moment, and we could use your help to protect our rights. #Queer folks and #lgbtq friends and allies, please support.
Feel free to share broadly/openly with others. Steal, boost, repost your own. Let's get 100k signatures, please.

During #Apollo17, the Lunar Rover Vehicle logged the farthest distance from the LM of any Apollo mission, 4.7 miles (~7.5 km).
As a precaution, the LRV had a walk-back limit in the event of an LRV issue; astronauts had to have enough resources to walk back to the lunar module.
#NASAhistory
For our LRV fans, visiting an LRV driven on the Moon is a bit difficult since the 3 LRVs used for Apollo 15, 16, and 17 missions were left on the Moon. But you can find an LRV used for training at @airandspace.

Every time I see an LRV, I think, "Only AMERICANS would take a car with them to the moon."

@governa It's not free software, it's a giveaway of a proprietary game. We will always use our affiliate links, as we do need to earn monies to keep doing what we do.
Even for a free giveaway, if you went to then buy something else, we would then still get a tiny kickback. It's important for us.

A simple guide to Steam Play, Valve's technology for playing Windows games on Linux
Looking to test the waters with Linux gaming and don't want to lose access to your favourite Windows games? Here's a simple no-nonsense guide to actually using Steam Play.Liam Dawe (GamingOnLinux)
I still found this confusing:
"Can Steam Play be forced onto native Linux games?
Yes! Simply follow the same method above to force it."
I'd suggest something like "Yes! Choose a specific Proton version, and steam will use that, and thus the Windows version of the game"
The reverse section ("How do you force Steam to download a Native Linux game?") addresses my confusion pretty well, and so I'd suggest moving that same explanation of the model up.

Stubborn omicron wave sticking around for Christmas
afr.com/policy/health-and-educ…
Melbourne University epidemiologist Professor Nancy Baxter said the rising number of infections was due to waning immunity, but underreporting was camouflaging the prevalence of sickness.
“We think probably at least one in 50 Australians to one in 25 Australians currently have COVID,” Professor Baxter said.
“That’s a lot of COVID in circulation. And it’s peaking in the next week or two. That means there are going to be a lot of cases at Christmas where people want to get together. There’s a lot of risk.”
