Hubble’s Pillars of Creation continue to inspire on #WorldEmbroideryDay! 🪡 🧵

Fiber artist Melissa Cole has always been taken by the beauty and vastness of the universe. It’s what motivated their piece after Hubble’s iconic capturing of this star-forming region.

The light we can see with our eyes is only a small part of our universe's story.

With Hubble, astronomers can observe space across many wavelengths of light, veering into the ultraviolet and near-infrared spectrums.

It’s so well done. I’m taking an evolution course to get up to speed & flying through 3 chapters a week. Thoroughly enjoying it. The examples are excellent.

Whenever I need cheering up about the climate, things like this really help:

"During the 2010s the levelised cost (that is the average lifetime cost of equipment, per megawatt hour of electricity generated) of solar, offshore wind and onshore wind fell by 87%, 62% and 56%, respectively"

And that dramatic fall in costs isn't stopping.

Even the most short-term thinkers must be convinced by that!

They all fascinate me. So many different minerals tightly packed together is not at all what I imagined the interiors would look like. I expected more homogeneity. This one is a bit unusual. What's with the 2 metallic-looking bits at about 2 o'clock? They look like sheets of copper were cut; it's probably iron. Perhaps this is the homogeneity I anticipated, lol.
in reply to Steve's Place

@stevesplace they fascinate me too, the ones you are referring to could be inclusions of a different class as happens in chondrites. right why no homogeneity... perhaps the official theory is incorrect and a better theory is needed that can explain it.

I have really come to love Mastodon. So much so, I have followed everyone I found interesting, and everyone who has followed me.

Now I am following 7,500 people, and while I really enjoy that, Mastodon now prevents me from following anyone else.

I do not understand, why Mastodon would have such a rule. To me it seems very counterproductive to the whole concept of connecting with people from all over the world.

in reply to Randahl Fink

It's a universal limit, you can follow up to 7,500 and then a a ratio of 1.1x of your own followers (so if you have 7,500 followers, you can follow more people). We implemented it very long ago as an anti-abuse mechanism; similar limits exist on other social media platforms.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron
Gargron, it is not the best idea, but if there was a button to trim my follows down to only the people who followed me back, I might use it occasionally. Also, trimming out accounts that I followed but they haven't posted in 100 days. That kind of housekeeping ought to be standard, right?

Thanks for letting me know about the limit Randahl. I follow 2k people, but only about half have followed me back. I love the diversity, but manually trimming would be a huge task.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron
Thank you for the explanation! I thought that's what it said, reading the information on GitHub, but I've been mistaken before.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron This makes sense. I wonder, however: in addition to the global limits set by these variables, would it be possible to implement an allowlist of accounts exempt from this limit?
This would allow individual exceptions (perhaps through manual validation with the instance admins) without affecting everyone else and risking more spam. It would make sense in "legit" cases such as the one here!
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron thank you Eugen. That makes a lot of sense. I remember how the follow function on Twitter was abused by pornographic accounts to get attention. That was quite annoying.

However, the current error message is not accurate then. Could a solution be to add a "Read more" link to the message?

Alternatively, I believe updating the error message to explain the exact rule would be helpful.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

a user has asked you _why_ such a limit exists, but instead of answering the question you…

a) confirm that it does then b) go on to give some details on how exactly it works, then c) state that the limitation has been introduced «very long ago» and d) excuse its existance by refering to other social networks limiting their users…

what about the actual «why» question?

Excellent diagnosis and recommendations by @kissane.
erinkissane.com/mastodon-is-ea…

I'm a committed #Mastodon user. But I sympathize with the complaints she has gathered and understand why they drove many users away.

All of us who are here and committed to stay should take them seriously, especially if we want more people from our networks to give Mastodon a try (not deterred by its reputation), like what they find (not deterred by their experience), and decide to join us.
