So with #StarTrek being a struck work that shouldn't be promoted during the SAG-AFTRA strike (sagaftrastrike.org/podcaster-f…), my new #podcast Before the Future Came is taking a bit of a swerve in its premiere: beforethefuture.space/podcast/…

I'm excited to read Binti and geek about it with my cohosts! We'll keep the original premiere episode in our pocket until the strike ends (hopefully with their demands being met! ✊🏾).

The U.S. Southwest endured more than three weeks of extreme temperatures in July 2023.🌡️

If you are reading this, you enjoy the openness and decentralisation of Web 3.0.

On #WorldWideWebDay, let's fast-forward to the future.

Web 4.0 will blend virtual and real environments while boosting innovation, rich content and industrial applications.

To ensure everyone benefits from it, we will:
- Shape global standards for open Web 4.0
- Foster a European Web 4.0 industrial ecosystem
- Boost access to trusted information

Preprint from Salzberg team questioning a 2020 Nature paper from Rob Knight 😮

"the raw read counts were vastly over-estimated for nearly every bacterial species, often by a factor of 1000 or more."

"Our conclusion after re-analysis is that the near-perfect association between microbes and cancer types reported in the study is, simply put, a fiction."

Major data analysis errors invalidate cancer microbiome findings

@alexcc “The models included species that had never been reported in humans, and that were associated only with extreme environments, ocean-dwelling species, plants, or other non- human environments.” - I’ve called this out when reviewing manuscripts on multiple occasions! It’s so basic
in reply to Feargal Ryan

@alexcc great example of why carefully preprocessing and validating the inputs for these models is so important.

every time a conversation about new publishing modalities runs aground on "but what about peer review" as if journals are the only means of reviewing anything I remember this paragraph.

It’s fascinating to start seeing multiple trend pieces that point out that people not having to commute for an hour or more after work is stimulating the economy. They are more likely to go out to dinner, a concert or take a weekend vacation.

Some argue this has staved off a recession.

📚 Pretty nervous about this, but here goes. Here's a side project I've been working on for the past few months. It's called Viberary and it's a semantic search engine. It gives you book recommendations based on ✨vibes. ✨ You enter a search query like "funny scifi" and it returns a list of (hopefully!) good recommendations.

viberary.pizza/

There is an about page that explains the data, model, etc. It's still pretty early stages but it's been a labor of love for me.

BTW: Shakespeare didn't necessarily make up a bunch of words and phrases. He borrowed a lot from other writers and common folk whose words did not always make it into publication.

My german literature teacher absolutely tried to convince us that Steven King wasn’t a good writer at all.
in reply to Muse

Just a passing comment! I feel for teach & lecturers alike. They are stuck in a repetitive phrase catch of correlating their students errors. Not an in-conducive outcome for creativity writing.

maximising Windows into new temporary workspaces is the macos way. Incidentally this video made me finally understand why macos does that! I have to say, I absolutely hate it. If I want a new workspace for that window, I'll tell you! The rest of the mockups looks promising.
