Happy Monday!
Today is #TransDayOfRemembrance.

For those who didn't see it, I had a major article come out this weekend—an attack on the concept of "gender ideology" and a call for Catholic curiosity about queer experience.

After OpenAI tried all weekend to hire former CEO Sam Altman back, Microsoft hired him and fellow co-founder Greg Brockman. Altman will be CEO of a new AI research team. Great move by MS — and obvious in retrospect…didn’t see many pundits predicting this… theverge.com/2023/11/20/239688…

Okay, everyone who was in one of those "wouldn't AI coming to adventure games be disastrous/improbable/weird" conversations we had at @adventurex earlier this month should probably pay attention to this.

gamingonlinux.com/2023/11/poin…

As someone who cannot art for shit, I can absolutely see why a person would do this. And it's not like they're charging money for the game. But I find it somewhat disheartening in a field of game development where "lovingly handcrafted" is kind of a given.

And, at the risk of sounding both precious and pretentious, the implications for the genre as an art form should this prove to be worthwhile are worrying.

Well spotted, @gamingonlinux

I always find the idea that someone "can't art" to be a failure of our educational and social systems.

There are so many ways to art. The biggest thing that makes art is time and a willingness not to give up. Even visually unappealing stuff finds an audience when there's enough passion & truth behind it.

Massive success is iffy sure but AI art won't fix that. If everything can look phenomenal then something else will be the reason for success.

I literally cannot art, you would be horrified at anything I tried to draw

I've tried using AI as a shortcut for gaming artwork to reduce workload but I've never found it to be very consistent & this looks the same... Passable with a cursory glance but adventure game scenes are often viewed for extended periods.

So far AI art is good for a laugh but it has no vision & no genuine originality so I don't think artists need fear yet.

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

well, it was bound to happen.

i see a lot of people in the diy ml sphere who train datasets for stuff like this with only ethically sourced material (eg self-made or CC0 stuff). any words on that from these devs?

A friend keeps wanting me to play Dead by Daylight with them, but it uses Easy Anti-Cheat and I haven't played anything or done anything on my windows box in over a year. Running Fedora with a decent system.

Not sure if it would flag and stop me there either. Does Easy Anti-Cheat work with any games in Linux now?

in reply to Erick White

@Gronok EAC is supported on Linux / Steam Deck on a per-game basis, Day by Daylight has worked fine for ages
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

Thanks. I wasn't sure, as I know some games if I try swear they will ban you. So I've not ran with him or tried for awhile.

@gamingonlinux@mastodon. Think Valve needs to hold some of these companies to account over the murky Linux support. They’re selling the games and DLC to Linux people quite happily without a clear message of support or continuity.

Of late the "in" colour to paint houses is: grey. Boring grey. "Boring" green at least blends into the lovely countryside. "Boring" white at least reflects a lot of heat radiation during summer. It's also very in to wear black all day at work, then go out and party in black.

Ah, nothing like safe choices!

How about more FUN choices? How about choices that are creative? How about choices where people aren't terrified of being seen to be like "lower" status people like women or people of colour.

Biologist J. B. S. Haldane once quipped that if there's a God, the Creator seems to have “an inordinate fondness for beetles.”

Why? Well, 1/2 of species described in #science are insects (among eukaryotes). Of those, >1/3 are beetles, at ~400,000 known species.

I’m fond of these critters bc I began my career working with Plagiodera versicolora, a particularly cute beetle.

Now some entomologists suspect there may be just as many parasitic wasps but that’s a tale for another day.

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Haldane also wrote the idiosyncratic children’s book My Friend Mr Leakey, one of the more unusual ways to discover biology & genetics when you went to see what else the author had written.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Sir Terry Pratchett agrees about the beetles. And I think that biochemists would rather claim Haldane as one of their own. Polymath indeed.

@Matt_Noyes BTW, have you seen the budget discussion I've initiated here: loomio.com/d/n1TbwozE/toward-a… Curious if you think this is worth doing before the new governance model gets adopted.

How about if I were to share the budget proposal in the main Loomio group for feedback, adding some language that this will serve to guide a process that will get taken over by the OC? Or should we just wait?

Day 4: Ten Days, Ten Films.

This is a lot of fun!
Over ten days you pick an image from a film without any title to give away where it is from, so that people can guess. You can also nominate others to do the same. That way more people are in on the game! (or not–your choice 😀 )

But remember: NO SPOILERS! If you recognise a film, don’t say what it is! Say something that indicates you know, but allows others to guess as well. Your messages then become helpful hints!
