Marketer sparks panic with claims it uses smart devices to eavesdrop on people

(Note the article attempts to downplay the claims by the companies involved but it doesn't actually prove that they don't do exactly what they said they were doing.... listening in on the microphone)

Your Smart Phone Is Possibly Spying On You And Recording Your Conversations Near It

(Google has just recently made a big deal that they will NO LONGER be storing GPS data from devices so it cannot be requested by police and other agencies by warrant… which means that until now they have been, including their Google Maps software).

I shall take them at their word. (Not)

Gaslighting Wayland Devs To Fix Multi Window Apps #Linux #YouTube youtu.be/7ju6tnep-pU
in reply to Brodie Robertson

This was a good update on how the proposal is going.

Personally I like the term canvas (client virtual canvas or client positioning canvas) as it's a familiar in web CSS and drawing applications.

Stealing from drawing apps, the next logical concept is to allow the user to draw a selection box around a collection of windows already on the desktop, and choose Group, assigning them to a parent canvas to be moved (or tiled) as a group.
And the converse option of UnGroup.

in reply to Paul L

@prlzx I don't know if that would fit as an upstream protocol feature but it would be neat to see a desktop experiment with that
in reply to Brodie Robertson

I think it's a phase 2 thing as it allows a user to expressly signal an intent to the Wayland compositor that they regard these windows to be related (even if from a different app or binary) rather than ceding control to the application.

So it ought to pass some original objections about "can't have apps just placing themselves wherever they want" since the user initiated it.

Also works for applications that allow you to launch a "helper" app from its own menu/toolbar …?

in reply to Brodie Robertson

If devs are willing to actually implement it, I'm good with the third option. It is stupidly convoluted, but I guess that is what is needed to happen to make the most people happy.

I'm also worried about wierd cases where apps are relying on some hack or other bad design practises to function and then messing up when the hack no longer works due to the nature of this design. Though I guess this is true whenever any change happens

THIS IS IT!

I actually looked for a tree like this for Christmas!

in reply to Muse

They're not fighting over it. Maybe they're rejoicing their firstborne actually is a table saw and not one of those supercool Dyson inventions. After all, we know nothing about the daily life of a dinosaur, their fears and desires.

You know, I really miss Raptr: the service that allowed you to track, compare, and share game achievements and play stats cross-platform. I wish I had something like Letterboxd for games, something I could use to centrally catalog my vast cross-platform game collection, track my backlog, and organize my collection, and also use it to shit-talk achievement comparisons and completion stats with my son.

in reply to Brian

Huh, I remember Raptr! I didn’t know it shut down, completely forgot about its existence. I guess Steam replaced it for most.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron Steam never really did the same things though (and still doesn't). I can't track my Xbox gaming through Steam, for example.

Something to think about Threads boarding over Activity Pub. They just opened a few accounts from Threads team to be able to be followed from ActivityPub servers.

Look where @mosseri from Threads already is, even surpassing @Gargron in just a couple of days.

I hope this won't be the tsunami that flooded and ruined ActivityPub instances.

(according to that site, of course)

in reply to Eugen Rochko

@mosseri wow, thanks. That’s really a relief. I think I’m on the boat of those that look at this threads joining fediverse doubting it will be good or not.

I've been told the creator of these ideas for Lego has done a whole series of them. WHO ARE THEY? Why hasn't Lego hired them?

Teens don’t know everything − and those who acknowledge that fact are more eager to learn

"In all of these studies, intellectually humbler adolescents showed in a variety of ways and via a variety of different measures that, when they got something wrong, they cared about getting it right the next time. Rather than throw up their hands and declare themselves to be helpless in the face of ignorance, intellectually humbler students set to work on learning more.

"Other researchers’ findings that corroborate these results show that young people higher in intellectual humility are more motivated to learn and earn higher grades, in part because they are more open to corrective feedback."

in reply to Muse

This is the problem in the U.S.A. (and world) lack of humility. People think they know everything, the internet feeds it, and they think they are experts. And society and the world dies.

Intellectual humility is a key ingredient for scientific progress

"Openness to inquiry does not, of course, imply that scientists are obligated to accept theories they take to be wrong. What we ought to accept is that we too might be wrong, that something good might come of the pursuit of those other ideas and theories, and that tolerating rather than persecuting those who pursue such things just might be the best way forward for science and for society."

Lord Kelvin, who in 1902 predicted mechanical flight would never become a thing.

in reply to Muse

Michael Dickson is the author of the quote.
Lord Kelvin was his example of someone speaking authoritatively when they shouldn't have.
