All of them ascribe true humanity only to powerful white men. Everyone else are things to own and to use.

The basic mechanisms are similar with a 'tree'. It seems that if there is a brain, then there is 'personality' at some level. How that personality manifests itself to humans determines how humans interact with that thing.
And of course, there are lots of human 'personalities' too.
