This false belief, which Slovic calls “pseudoinefficacy,” gives rise to internal monologues that run something like this: They’re threatening people by the millions all over the country—what I can do locally won’t even make a dent. As people grow more aware of rising levels of hatred, they also start to show signs of psychic numbing, becoming more indifferent to the suffering of people in trouble. In widely cited studies, Slovic has shown that when people hear about escalating numbers of starving children, they take less and less action to relieve the children’s plight.

Pseudoinefficacy and psychic numbing are linked. When we perceive the scale of a hate campaign as overwhelming, we grow more convinced that we can’t do anything to fight it—so to keep despair at bay, we may mentally distance ourselves from what’s happening. When people feel bombarded with one grim news report after another, says neuroscientist Gil Sharvit of Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, “you can generate a complete withdrawal effect: ‘I don’t want to see any politics anymore. I cannot handle that.’”

...Slovic has found through years of research that the best way to draw people’s attention to injustice, and motivate them to act, is to communicate that injustice on a more human scale. For instance, after Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad turned against his own people, killing them by the hundreds of thousands, there was very little widespread outcry despite the mounting death numbers.

What finally awakened the world’s attention wasn’t another in a series of atrocity bulletins. It was a photo of a single Syrian child lying face-down on a Turkish beach, drowned while attempting to flee to Greece with his family.

The week after the photo was published, Slovic found, daily donations to a fund collecting money for Syrian refugees suddenly soared to 55 times the previous amount. “Statistics didn’t make any difference,” he says. “It was this one photograph that created an emotional, jarring response.”

I just discovered why some of my followers from larger #Mastodon instances (like mastodon.social) would mysteriously unfollow me after a while!

A pull request was just merged in Mastodon that fixes a critical bug in their follower synchronization mechanism.

Turns out Mastodon implements the FEP-8fcf specification (Followers collection synchronization across servers), but it expected all followers to be in a single page collection. When followers were split across multiple pages, it would only see the first page and incorrectly remove all followers from subsequent pages!

Postbox Add-Ons for Friendica

Bookface 1.6 introduces a new feature called "Postboxes" that allows you to create a post with a colorful background like a similar feature on Facebook. It's built into the Bookface scheme, but I also created TWO add-ons for Friendica if a server administrator wants to roll it out for all of their users regardless of what theme they prefer.

Postbox: simply adds a minified stylesheet to the head with the Postbox styling. It doesn’t add any interface for creating a Postbox, but users can still create them manually with BBcode.

Zen Postbox: adds the minified stylesheet to the head, but also adds a tool to the post composer to insert a Postbox or wrap selected text in one.

To manually create a Postbox just wrap your text in the Postbox class BBcode like this:

Well, still, there'd be no reason not to strip out the [class] wrapper since other platforms can't use it anyway. There isn't anything similar in Markdown so far as I know, which might be why the raw BBcode is getting through to Disapora? I'm guessing it's missing the conversion from BBcode [class] to Markdown syntax. Which should be conversion to nothing. I'd check for it myself but I have no clue where the processing for other platforms even is in the Friendica code.

Ok, I’ve been trying to follow the Friendica code and I may be reading it wrongly, but it looks to me like the BBcode gets converted to HTML for most platforms, but then that HTML gets converted to Markdown for Diaspora (and I think Hubzilla?). But if that’s the case I don’t understand how the BBcode is getting all the way through to those other platforms as shown in the screenshots @Matthias posted?

It looks to me like it should be sending the <span> to them as well not the raw BBcode, because it seems the HTML to Markdown converter by default "preserves HTML tags without Markdown equivalents like <span> and <div>." At least according to the README in /friendica/vendor/league/html-to-markdown/ - which also says [i]“To strip HTML tags that don’t have a Markdown equivalent while preserving the content inside them, set strip_tags…"

This week, an essay about #Bluesky's proposal for setting user preferences on their accounts. This allows people to indicate how they want their data to be handled off-protocol. I wrote about how the #fediverse can improve on this, using its strengths of many different communities, each with its own culture and values.

The fediverse can sidestep the question of default account values because people have many accounts on the fediverse, for different use cases. This gives the option to set a different default value for different services. A Pixelfed platform for close friends should set stricter default data-handling preferences. A Mastodon server for blogging platform Medium that has the goal of giving more visibility and reach to its writers could consider setting default values to be more open.

The power of the fediverse is in that there does not have to be a single default at all. Instead, communities and servers should be able to set default values for themselves. This can help shape the tone of the community, and makes it clear what the identity of a community is about. What’s even more powerful is that this only concerns the default value, giving people the ability to set their preferences as they desire. The state of the open social web is such that there are now two protocols in competition with each other. That gives the ability for the fediverse to take ideas from other networks, and improve on them in a way that plays up to the unique strengths that the fediverse has.

@Gargron yeah, but that does not cover everything. Especially such more interesting cases as the mastodon threads research dataset that was just released.

Regardless, the essay is about who sets the default values, and that this decision should be delegated to server admins, and not made by software platforms such as mastodon itself

Mastodon asks the user after sign-up what their preference is. And of course different platforms can handle this differently, e.g. if Threads has no expectations of being able to participate without appearing in discovery feeds, they would default to true.

Right. That's kind of the point! The proto-fediverse was dominated by a VC-funded startup -- just like today's ATmosphere. And eight to ten years later the next-generaiton protocols (originally also developed by a corporation) got refined and adopted by a standards bodies -- just like will probably happen with AT Proto.

And presumably just as somebody from a Meta-funded non-profit has repeatedly shut down criticisms of Meta on the W3C ActivityPub mailing list, at some point somebody from a Bluesky-funded non-profit will try to shut down criticisms of Bluesky on whatever standards group is trying to take things forward.

There's a lot to critique with Bluesky but many of the critques apply to the ActivityPub fediverse as well.

Also HP is a bloatware company, not a gaming company. What is our level of trust in them to appease the gaming community's interests, or at least not be hostile toward them as consumers?

Is that what I typed? No, I can see that it wasn't.

What I asked (more between the lines I suppose) was:

1. What is the difference? As in, in what way would HP differentiate its handheld device from Valve's first-party device, let alone appear more appealing to both consumers and shareholders? What is your opinion on this (and not a fallacious handwave with the implication that it's too extreme a question to entertain)?

2. Can a reader of this question, for the sake of hypothesis, imagine and describe for us (the "forum") a scenario that they feel constitutes a realistic vision of a handheld gaming device manufactured by Hewlett-Packard? Do we maybe even have any examples?

Instead, the response I got was the literal rewriting and reduction of my entire line of questioning to "why would we do new thing when we have old thing" — or actually, come to think of it, you didn't even bother being generous enough to preserve that much of the original context, reducing it all the way to its fundamental "x"/"y" components like that's not the literal definition o

Comic- A brown wooden boat named Ol' Federal Deficit is sinking into the water stern first. In the boat a fat huge alligator emblazoned with (tax cuts for the wealthy) is sitting at the stern happily waiting for the end result. The owner of the boat seems panicked and knows the end is nigh (his hat states "Senate GOP") but instead of addressing the fat alligator at the stern instead he is angry at the tiny orange cat at the raised bow screaming, "Too much weight! You! Get off the boat." The cat (obviously not the problem) is emblazoned with (Jobless Benefits.)

Yesterday was my dad’s birthday. DOGE wrote me a letter this month. They want money back from him.

He had schizophrenia and was sometimes homeless. In his later years I was able to help him stay housed, and he received $180 of SSI monthly which went toward his rent in assisted living in a low-income bed.

But DOGE has realized that they overpaid him. So they sent a letter warning that some of that money may need to be returned.

The thing is, my dad is dead.
