The Wikimedia Foundation, which owns Wikipedia, says its bandwidth costs have gone up 50% since Jan 2024 — a rise they attribute to AI crawlers.

AI companies are killing the open web by stealing visitors from the sources of information and making them pay for the privilege

Research will move elsewhere but will never fully recover I fear. There is a cost to churn.

Some major upgrades have arrived for Proton Drive and Docs.

news.itsfoss.com/proton-drive-…

in reply to It's FOSS

For this year they promised to publish an SDK to speed up Linux development. This last update states “Over the next few months, we’ll enhance the app further by adding more new features and releasing the Software Development Kit (SDK) that the new macOS app is based on, which we anticipate will serve as the basis for a highly requested Linux app.” So fingers crossed
in reply to It's FOSS

I read the headline, and stopped reading. #Proton continues to suck on #Linux, still prefers privacy invasive operation systems.

I consider Proton's focus on privacy as pure marketing, as long as the focus is Windows, which wants to make a screenshot of the desktop, your mails, your docs every few seconds and upload it to OpenAI. Your encrypted mails become publicly readable, and maybe the template for mails written by Copilot.

Good to see that in 2025 one still cannot buy justice. Let’s keep it that way…

While this is a good result for Wisconsin, the fact that judicial races are so partisanly politicized is not good for democracy. (Of course, the same could be said of the fact that judges are elected to begin with, IMO.)

cloudflare caused a fun bug for april fool's day! 🐪

due to an overly proactive filter rule intended to block a vulnerability in apache camel, cloudflare's WAF policy overzealously blocked innocent URLs containing the word "camel". this meant that certain packages could no longer be installed from NPM, some stackoverflow pages with "camel" in the title could not be loaded, etc.

cloudflare incident: cloudflarestatus.com/incidents…
NPM issue: github.com/npm/cli/issues/8203

this isn't the first time cloudflare has caused an issue with NPM, either (although this one is really NPM's fault): github.com/npm/cli/issues/836#…

Coalition may rethink rules that push car-makers to create cheaper EVs and hybrids for Australians

Opposition says Labor’s national vehicle emission standard is ‘poorly designed’, despite data showing uptick in green vehicle sales.

...More than 120 electric vehicles are now available in Australia as the new laws upend the nation’s status as a “dumping ground” for big, polluting cars. Prior to January Australia was the only OECD country without a vehicle emission standard.

The obsession with big cars is not only fuelling the climate crisis, it is making roads deadlier and adding to traffic congestion. And there are other costs – Australians spend on average almost $100 a week on fuel.. .

My heart is heavy as 10,000 government health workers, from the CDC to the FDA to the NIH, learned today that they have been laid off. You served your country selflessly and well, enduring much derision and receiving little praise—only to be met with insult and betrayal. I stand in solidarity with you during this difficult time.

These updates are no joke 🃏

I never thought very much about protists/amoebas, and reading this volume was a fascinating introduction to what seems to be an understudied field.

Now I'm wondering how I might isolate and sequence some interesting samples!

We have some amoeba in the lab but mainly from culture collections. We have not isolated any ourselves.

It really comes down to your goals, technical skills, free time, and how quickly you can and will learn new things. Arch is a great way to force yourself to learn new things if you love pain. Once you embrace the pain you can choose to live there or use an Arch based distro that does some of the grunt work for you. Do you like trying to figure out how to generate a UEFI boot entry or trying to find a package source to run a niche software on Debian?

I actually had a look since I did vaguely remember an EU Linux petition and sadly, @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu already killed it

While there is currently no formal project to establish an "EU Linux," there are many ongoing
initiatives that support the adoption of open source solutions within public administrations
across Member States. These efforts contribute to the EU’s broader objectives of transparency,
security, and technological independence in the digital domain.

They've been working very hard on this album, but I don't personally have a lot of connections to metalheads, so I'm hoping others on the fediverse do.

Whether you want to be a better ally, think you might be trans, or just don’t understand what this whole transgender thing is about, I highly recommend reading genderdysphoria.fyi/

It talks about what gender itself is, what gender incongruence feels like, the science behind how sex determination and sexual dimorphism works in humans, the diagnostic process for trans folks, and what HRT actually does and what is involved in transitioning. It’s a good read
