Truly my greatest professional joy is that, not only did we get to build a tool to help people stop AI bots from scraping up their work without consent, I was able to have our in-house artist create a SLOP sign to mark the spot where the bots expire.

If you are a non-profit or open source project that does good internet stuff, we’ll protect you for free. If not, then you can pay us money and we will hook you up. Either way, good tools to put you in control over the bots. fastly.com/blog/take-back-cont…

From the first #EarthDay: Students in St. Louis marched wearing masks to protest smog and air pollution.

The inaugural 1970 protests drew millions, and led to the creation of the EPA and clean air standards.

With science under greater attack than ever, we need more of this activism today!

$wife was getting super annoyed at having to smell a neighbor's cigarette smoke every time the window is open

so we've now spun up a wireless laser-scatter particulate sensor tied to outside air (<€30 in parts, thanks to ESPhome ā¤ and 6/8mm PVC tubing) which seems to detect within a second of it starting ā¤ā¤ā¤

New UX models have friction.

The Mach E has a push button door: push the button first, pop the door. It works once "you've read the manual" Two problems:
1. As I approached the car at Avis it was dark, I couldn't see the button at all so couldn't get it, I had to ask someone to let me in.
2. When I picked up my son at the airport, he had no idea how to open the passenger door so I had to open it from the inside.

Ford may keep this, but it's going to be a painful road. #ux

For Earth Day today, I had the honor of remembering Pope Francis on Democracy Now, recalling how first reading his Laudato Si' brought me to tears and how he saw social movements as a site of revelation: democracynow.org/2025/4/22/pop…
in reply to Nathan Schneider

@evan

any chance of getting #DemocracyNow on the fedi? at least an account but maybe a #mastodon server for staff or a #peertube or #owncast site for video...

the great promise of the #SocialWeb imo is that we can address the Chomsky concerns re attention. that the people not money can finally determine what info, ideas and art go viral. seems perfectly in line with the DN mission.

@mondoweiss is blazing the trail for establishing true indy media for the dissident left here.

Cool, but it feels very odd to me that they are using Unreal Engine instead of their own Creation Engine which modders already know how to use very well

Are upgrades from 24.10 still disabled? Surprised there was no mention of that given that it's been a rocky release.

Given the White House wants U.S. women to have more babies, my talk ā€œRethinking Populationā€ from 2014 seems particularly relevant.

The key theme is that all around the world, women with an education, the ability to enter the workforce & access to healthcare & medicine choose to have fewer children.

Where do fertility rates remain high? In places where child mortality is high, health conditions are poor & women don’t have as much autonomy & opportunity. #uspol #Trump
