We've challenged the cronyism at the heart of our political system

Challenging Sleaze - Baroness Michelle Mone used the government's Covid VIP lane to secure a contract for her husband’s company PPE MedPro. The High Court ordered the company to repay £122 million after they supplied unusable equipment to the NHS. Over 700 of us wrote emails to the Prime Minister to demand Baroness Mone is removed as a lawmaker and a timeline for scrapping the broken House of Lords.

Lots of supporters of this campaign have asked for more updates on the powerful achievements you’ve all helped deliver. So here’s what we’ve been up to over the last three months:

We've challenged the cronyism at the heart of our political system

[1]Building Insight - we’ve researched the government’s Devolution and Community Empowerment Bill, looking at how to centre ordinary people's voices in lawmaking.

Lobbying Lawmakers - we worked with supportive Lords on an amendment to the hereditary peers bill. Many of us wrote and posted personal letters to members of the House of Lords and together we got the idea of a citizens’ assembly onto the Lords' radar.

Building Power in Greater Manchester

Before we can replace the Lords with a House of Citizens we need a successful regional assembly we can point to, so we're pushing for a permanent citizens’ assembly for Greater Manchester.

Getting together - There’s a big gap in legitimacy and accountability in Greater Manchester, so we had our first in-person event in Greater Manchester, and followed up with intensive one-to-one organising meetings with local area volunteers. Because we know building a movement means getting active at the grassroots.

[2]Campaign collaboration - we're working with the Electoral Reform Society and Make Votes Matter on a joint petition. It tells Mayor Andy Burnham and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority that the people of Greater Manchester want a greater say.

[3]Looking Ahead: Real Voices, Real Change

We continue to make ordinary people heard.

Bringing people together - our parent organisation, Sortition Foundation, has sent invitations to over 100,000 lottery-selected people inviting them to join a citizens’ assembly,. We've also selected people like a jury for citizens’ assemblies across the UK and around the world. This includes working with the RSPCA [4], Torfaen Borough Council [5] and Birmingham Museums Trust [6] where representative groups of people discussed important issues like animal welfare and access to our heritage.

New Vox Pop Sneak Peek - we've been out and about on the streets asking people what they think of politics and what they would change if they received a Golden Ticket to join a permanent and powerful citizens’ assembly.
