I've always thought of a science fiction story where Venus developed intelligent life before us, but they polluted their atmosphere so much that they turned into the toxic hellhole that Venus is. Imagine someday a probe landing there and finding the ruins of civilization. 😳

Welcome to the first #HubbleFriday of 2023!

This image features the star cluster NGC 6355, which resides within our own Milky Way Galaxy at a distance of about 50,000 light-years.

Hello I have questions like if that star cluster was contained in a sphere, what's its radius? How many stars are there? What is the average distance between stars? What happens to star clusters over time?

I'll take me answers off the air, thanks.

I’ll gladly support them in the future. I’ve sunk too many hours in this game and I still need to unlock everything!

That color pallette is delicious. Good chance we'll be able to hdr this on deck this year too. Yay!
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

@gamingonlinux: We'll see how it goes after all this time. It's not the most protracted schedule for a game I've backed through crowdfunding - I'll admit to the idiocy of backing Star Citizen - but it has been a circuitous route to completion.

totally agree. Yes, i like to play on hard mode but i really dont want to be forced to play it like that. Also very important accsessibility feature wich a lot of developers seem to ignore these days.

full ack! There are genres I kinda like but are just too bad playing on a normal or even harder level.

Hello, scholar social! Here's my #introduction

I'm here from the Ecology & Evolutionary Biology dept at the University of Toronto and the Palaeobiology dept at the Royal Ontario Museum.

I'm a PhD Candidate studying growth and life history in extant and extinct cats, using both observational data (collected by others) and data from the growth record preserved in bone (collected by me)! See below for what a fossil Smilodon bone looks like under the microscope 👀

Dragons are real. And they live in the ocean.

Blue Glaucus or “the blue dragon” is a brightly colored nudibranch that incorporates toxic chemicals & stinging cells from prey into its skin as a defense against predation.

And in my humble opinion, it’s more spectacular than anything ever imagined in Westeros. Image: Sylke Rohrlach #science #nature #SharedPlanet

So, a "PR" person, who was given some files she does not understand by an ex-twitter employee and has been "revealing" them (misleadingly) is now freaking out that that someone from the State Dept visited her public website, claiming that the gov't is trying to intimidate her. By... visiting her public website after she claimed to be releasing things. And she's asking Elon why it's happening. It's very, very silly and confused people all around.

why and when did the moon start being given names? It's The Moon. This seems more like astrology than astronomy.

Sometimes literary works of fiction inspire scientists.

Meet “Ampulex dementor” aka “the dementor wasp.” This species, discovered a few years ago, was named after the mythical dementors in "Harry Potter" that suck souls with abandon.

Why? The dementor wasp injects venom into its prey, turning cockroaches into passive zombies before dragging them off to be devoured. #nature #science #books #SharedPlanet

Kind of a mean thing to name a species after terfy fascist fantasy things. No creature deserves that.

I love that Letterboxd now offers its top tier members to choose which poster appears for any given movie in their collection. It seemed like an odd feature to me at first, but as I thought about it and how I obsess over specific posters for certain movies, it made sense.

Have you explored the world of 1960s-80s Polish movie poster art? What a fascinating, beautiful rabbit hole.
