Take a step with Don't Look Up & Count Us In
Don't Look Up is part of Count Us In, a movement building the world’s largest community of people and organizations taking effective action on climate change.dontlookup.count-us-in.com
We live in such an individualized society that we often focus more on our personal carbon footprint (the emissions associated with what we eat, how we travel, where we live) than on our climate shadow: how we interact with and influence those around us.
Yet, how does any system change? It changes when people within that system advocate and call for change.
That's why long-time climate activist @billmckibben says, "the most important thing an individual can do right now is not be such an individual."
And that is why I'm convinced our voices are the most powerful tool we have in the fight against climate change!

Where do viruses hide in the human body?
The question of how SARS-CoV-2 persists in the body has refocused scientists on the question of where viruses persist in humans more generally.The BMJ
@memerman @nellgreenfieldboyce
Michael said it well. I would add the following three points:
1) DNA viruses (and retroviruses) are much better studied than RNA viruses, simply because DNA is easily detectable, whereas RNA rapidly degrades in a matter of hours, and is therefore difficult to detect.
(continued)
@memerman @nellgreenfieldboyce
2) DNA viruses are well-appreciated to exist in a "latent" state, where they can last indefinitely out of the reach of the immune system.
3) However, there has been less appreciation of the fact that RNA viruses also can have "latent" states, where they can also last indefinitely out of the reach of the immune system.
For example:

Significance analysis for clustering with single-cell RNA-sequencing data - Nature Methods
This study presents a significance analysis framework for evaluating single-cell clusters. Application of the method detects cases of over-clustering in reported single-cell RNA-sequencing analysis results.Nature
This seems like a similar idea (possibly more generally applicable & precise, but no R package for single-cell data yet):

Selective Inference for Hierarchical Clustering
Classical tests for a difference in means control the type I error rate when the groups are defined a priori. However, when the groups are instead defined via clustering, then applying a classical test yields an extremely inflated type I error rate.arXiv.org

I find myself wanting to contextualize the impact of gender-affirming care bans in a thread. I'm not writing a proper post on a Friday afternoon, Bluesky has reached a crisis point over moderation, Twitter feels death-throes-y to me, so I'm just going to post it here.
For reference, a judge in Kentucky just reluctantly reversed himself, allowing Kentucky's ban on gender affirming care to go into effect after the 6th circuit recently allowed a Tennessee law to.

BREAKING: Kentucky ban on gender-affirming care for minors can be enforced during appeal, judge rules. In fallout from last weekend’s ruling from the U.S.Substack Notes
The three pieces of context I want to bring together are:
1. This impacts a tiny percentage of young people in the US.
2. Despite that, the damange being done to these kids is very high, and could be life threatening for some.
3. The full threat is much larger. There's a potential for precedents that could fundamentally change the relationship Americans have with medical care and place governments run by Christian zealots in the middle of deciding what medical treatments are allowed.

Interesting insight by Eric Hoffer. Do I agree with it? I don't know, but it's certainly a thought.
Hoffer argues that fanatical and extremist cultural movements, whether religious, social, or national, arise when large numbers of frustrated people, believing their own individual lives to be worthless or spoiled, join a movement demanding radical change. But the real attraction for this population is an escape from the self, not a realization of individual hopes: "A mass movement attracts and holds a following not because it can satisfy the desire for self-advancement, but because it can satisfy the passion for self-renunciation."
