When I started DAIR, I read this book, The Revolution Will not be Funded. Precisely because I knew there would be a time we would have to stand up for the humanity of Palestinians, and because I knew the history of how anyone doing that has been treated. This book was created by an organization who's funding got pulled when they did that 20 years ago, with chapters contributed by a number of people.

One of the things I was able to do on the birdsite that there just isn't much opportunity to here is find out "current events" in carob by doing a search every week or so.

If you ever see a carob toot, please forward it to me, especially if it's not a tired carob hippie joke, but actual research or market or real life info re Ceratonia siliqua/#Carob

Please boost to get my request out there. Thanks so much! @plantscience

OK the release candidate for #inkscape 1.3.1 has dropped and If you can, please do me a solid and test the live path effects:

That is, everything to do with the rounded corners, tapered stroke, super pen/pencil, clones, etc etc you get the idea. It's the one part of the code that I think is at a high risk of crashes and regressions.

You can report bugs to the usual place. I can help if you get a crash and aren't seeing a crash report screen.

Please re-share!

in reply to Martin Owens

I love inkscape - I use it all the time for scientific figures. I switched from Illustrator once I started my own group and I haven't looked back!

I'd by happy to chat - my usage is not that advanced though - mainly fixing up scientific figures once I've made general plots in R, for example

"Fiasco" has a fun origin!

It goes back to an Italian phrase that meant "to make a bottle." Weird!

Nobody knows for sure what that meant, but the leading theory seems to be that the loser in a game would have to buy the next bottle of wine.

It was first used in English as theater slang to describe a failure or breakdown in a performance.

When we think of #food, we often aren’t paying attention to soil, but it’s actually what sustains our global food system.

Unfortunately, #ClimateChange, unsustainable farming practices & more are degrading soil around the world.

I don’t get to see each episode of Serving Up Science until they are published, but I like this new video. And I’m so glad they let me talk about soil health. youtu.be/FnOHwq6iSpk?si=5umwoG…

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Have you come across these systems?

wickcuriosityshop.net/collecti…

Charles Seber was using some of the planter systems that he made, to experiment with changing the soil grades.

It had to be done within the normal crop-rotation cycle process to avoid nutrient-depletion, but it worked well as a route towards generating healthy soil bacteria. 😁.

The planters operate by optimising the conditions for soil bacteria growth. 😁
