El #softwarelibre como derecho humano

En una sociedad cada vez más dependiente de la tecnología ¿Tiene cabida el considerar la libertad del software que mueve esa tecnología que usamos como un derecho humano?

My #AntennaPodEcho for 2024.

Honorable mention to @grammargirl

I used to listen to the Grammar Girl Quick and Dirty Tips... podcast on Stitcher years ago, but it wasn't until recently that I added the feed to AntennaPod and started listening again.

in reply to nebunez

Welcome back! I love to hear that!

I'm actually curious how you feel about the show now versus how it was before.

I feel like it's changed a lot — so much so that I've been thinking about doing a survey to see how people feel about it. But as someone who stopped and came back, I think you'd have an especially interesting perspective!

in reply to Mignon Fogarty

It has changed but only in good ways! And I didn't even really notice the changes at first.

When I started listening again it felt familiar. The core format is there, but it feels like it's matured. I especially love the interviews.

A really massive sustainabiliy win from Microsoft. Their new data center design will recycle water used for cooling servers instead of consuming fresh water. This will save 125M liters of water per year.

In combination with the push for nuclear powered data centers across big tech, this should mitigate the environmental costs of the industry’s significant push into AI.

in reply to Dare Obasanjo

Another option is to just not push into AI. Imagine these improvements, but used for something more useful.

With our most recent update, creating and editing lists has never been easier in the #Mastodon web app. Lists allow you to declutter your home feed by organizing accounts into arbitrary alternative feeds. And there is some other stuff we may be working on to make this feature even more powerful...
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Last I used this feature (years ago now) I had to follow the account to add them to a List. Is that still the case?

"ICE cannot enter your home unless they have a warrant signed by a judge ... Most of the time ICE agents will only have warrants signed by ICE officers, and those warrants do not give them permission to enter your home.

If they say they have a warrant, ask them to slip it under the door. If you open the door, you are giving them permission to enter your home. This is why it is important to keep your door closed during the entire interaction with ICE."

A little late to the party, but learning screen command is rocking my world right now. Simple "screen -L -S sessionname" creates persistent session with logging for notes.

When juggling around multiple remote machines for data crunching, terminal multiplexer like this seems essential.

as a grad student, before i knew about this, i closed my laptop while it was running a job and the screen melted.

This idea keeps sticking with me—that we have just seen a transformation in US national politics, from "campaign finance" to "campaign financialization," from funding campaigns to campaigns as vehicles for explicit investment and speculation. nathanschneider.info/2024/11/t…

Takes them forever to fix these things!

Those of us with celiac disease are still lobbying for barley to appear on food label allergy lists - it's used in anything "malted" - including most candy - and contains gluten... but only wheat has to be declared.

in reply to Muse

Gah. Deleted my comment. I'm being too negative. Sorry.
in reply to Muse

We need to be able to trust people. We do not live in a society conducive to trust. Capitalism, as practised, erodes trust.
