Another security tip: Don't use Debian or LTS distros. Those distributions constantly use outdated software and usually only fix security issues if they have a CVE number.
Ubuntu also does not guarantee any fix to "Universe" packages. Even well known software with critical security issues might not get fixes, if the package maintainer loses interest (this for example happend with Mozilla Seamonkey webbrowser in the past!)
