Research suggests rich people tend to be more selfish

"From Disneyโ€™s Scrooge McDuck and Cruella de Vil to DC Comicsโ€™ Lex Luthor, and to Mr Burns in the Simpsons, there are plenty of examples of wealthy people using their money and power in evil ways. But is there any truth to the stereotype that rich people are mean?

"There are many rich people who act benevolently, including philanthropists who give a lot of their money away. However, research in psychology has found a clear link between wealth and unethical behaviour, including an increased tendency to cheat and steal."

in reply to Muse

  1. I'll judge the people as they are at the time.
  2. I don't need a study to know the rich are predisposed to selfishness. By virtue of fate I was born in the US and have had decades to observe a nation controlled in part by the wealthiest, most selfish, most evil people who live in bubbles of privilege, rolling in their own filth, while forcing thier children and the wage slaves in their corporations to do the same.

in reply to Muse

Look, I'm coping. I'm also self-caring; I clipped my 1/4" claw like fingernails to something approximating socially acceptable today. Maybe I'll trim my verdant ear hair tomorrow!

there were pinball machines that were completely analog,(it can keep track of scores for multiple people at once). Fourier transform was once done with mechanical machines. Its nuts how much we did with gears and relays before we had the transistor.

Private equity takeover of hospitals led to rise in Medicare emergency patient deaths, says study

I have seen these things play out in various local hospitals. Cost-cutting in the form of cutting the number of nurses, increasing the number of patients per nurse, etc all have major impacts on patient well being

Bye bye, Windows 10! Microsoft is stopping support for the operating system today. If you're still using it, now is a good time to consider alternatives such as Linux, which is free and open source (like LibreOffice): blog.documentfoundation.org/blโ€ฆ @Endof10 #endof10

So #Nestle is apparently really, really bad..

I knew about some of it (like the recent scandal with #Perrier water) but not all, for example:

  • the lobbying for removing access to water as a human right
  • the aggressive extraction of water in order to bottle it and sell it for profit
  • the use of forced child labour to produce sugar
  • forcing their bad milk baby formula on people from developping countries

Somehow they just get along with paying some fines when found out and continuing their unethical business.

I'm not sure what the best source for all this is (let me know if you have one) but I'm going to try and boycott their products. Is there an app that can tell you if a brand belongs to Nestle since I don't think it's always shown on the packaging? In the meantime I found this: ethicalconsumer.org/food-drinkโ€ฆ

hello british users on this webbed site. please explain to me why the speed camera sign depicts an 1800s bellows camera.

do not make the same mistake that my notoriously british friend lucy did in assuming that this is a box camera with the lens facing towards the viewer with a mounting bracket. this is a bellows camera facing sideways with the lens pointed at the road. read em and weep.

windows on NTFS has a neat feature called transparent compression where you can set a folder/file to be compressed, making it smaller, while still being able to use it normally with other programs

unfortunately, the compression process is a touch slow

in reply to Lynnesbian

UPDATE: since making this post, the progress bar has moved a further 10%. it still says there's a day remaining, however. it is perhaps possible that explorer's time remaining estimates are inaccurate? surely not
in reply to zaire arcana

@soop you can use compact.exe to do it in the background and also choose the more aggressive LZMS compression algorithm (albeit at the expense of needing to periodically run it again to compress new files)

you can also use winget to install CompactGUI, which will run in the background and re-run compact on the folders you have it set to watch whenever Windows tells it that the system is idle :3

in reply to It's FOSS

interesting but how much will the average user consider as a true benefit? They mainly care about user friendliness and having the software they need.
I am not sure the advanced desktop customization is a major selling point.
