Esther Lederberg (December 18, 1922 – November 11, 2006) pioneered bacterial genetics, discovering lambda phage and F factor, inventing replica plating and furthered the understanding of the transfer of genes between bacteria by specialized transduction. She founded Stanford's Plasmid Reference Center. Despite groundbreaking work, she never got tenure and her discoveries are often credited to her Nobel laureate husband.

Today we celebrate the birthday of not one, but two amazing women in science! 🤗🎉Marie Skłodowska-Curie (1867), who discovered #radium & #polonium & pioneered #radioactivity, & Lise Meitner (1878), whose brilliance uncovered the physics behind #nuclearfission. Happy birthday! #OTD #WomenInStem #WomeninScience

"The moment of discovery" does not always exist: the scientist's work is too tenuous, too divided, for the certainty of success to crackle out suddenly in the midst of his laborious toil like a stroke of lightening, dazzling him by its fire.

In: Eve Curie - Madame Curie - Chapter XII (p. 158)

#OnThisDay, 8 Apr 1959, Mary K Hawes initiates a project to create the first universal programming language for computers used by businesses and government. Grace Hopper led the team that then created COBOL. Some mainframes are still using it.

Happy birthday to #physicist Lise Meitner (1878-1968) who explained #nuclear #fission. She worked with chemists Hahn & Straßmann in 30s Berlin, investigating whether there were any stable elements beyond uranium. They discovered bombarding nucleus of U-235 with neutrons actually triggered it to fission, or break, into 2 nuclei of roughly half the size & some free neutrons! Hahn’s chemistry lead to startling discovery of barium,🧵

Happy birthday to #biochemist Marie Maynard Daly (1921-2003), 1st Black woman to earn a PhD in #chemistry in the US! She made important research contributions to our understanding of the biochemisty of the cell nucleus & cardiovascular issues & the chemistry of histones & protein synthesis. She established that "no bases other than adenine, guanine, thymine, and cytosine were present in appreciable amounts" in DNA - #womenInSTEM #BlackInSTEM #histstm #printmaking #linocut #histmed #HeartDisease

This is Elisabeth Wollman (1888-1943). Her life was extraordinary & her legacy is phenomenal.

In collaboration with her husband, Eugène, she was a pioneer of what became molecular genetics. This pic is her Pasteur Institute portrait from the early 1920s.

Their groundbreaking work was carried on by a colleague & their son, leading to a Nobel prize & more.

CW: The Wollmans' lives were ended in Auschwitz.

I've just created her Wikipedia page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elisabet…

Today I learned the word ‘scientist’ was coined in 1834 to describe Mary Somerville, replacing the term ‘man of science’.

An extraordinary pharmaceutical #chemist to celebrate for #BlackHistoryMonth - Alice Ball (1892-1916) who developed 1st effective treatment for #leprosy. Her research saved 1000s from exile & painful, ineffective lifelong treatment for leprosy, & she was a trailblazer for both women & Black scientists.

Ball studied #chemistry at UW earning a BSc & 2nd degree in pharmacy 2 years later.

I’m doing a project featuring little-known women of science as a part of my studies as a lab technician.
I’ll be drawing some portraits and illustrating the research and discoveries of some interesting scientists✨

Let’s start!

🧬Nettie Stevens. American geneticist who discovered chromosomes X/Y by studying Mealworms (Tenebrio molitor)
