I'm super curious to see what comes out of the Getty Images vs Stability AI lawsuit, whilst this would by no means be conclusive outside of "please don't replicate our watermark" but this is the first step in answering the AI copyright question theverge.com/2023/12/4/2398840โ€ฆ

brb GOING TO HAVE A CHAT WITH TEH WHALESES

vice.com/en/article/4a35kp/sciโ€ฆ

Denmark is a kingdom of three countries: Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

While the country of Denmark is sanctioning Russia, The Faroe Islands has now made a new fishing agreement with Russia, allowing Russian fishermen to sail into Faroese waters to catch fish.

I am of Faroese descent myself, and I love the Faroese people, but this decision is yet another proof, Faroese politics are controlled by selfish business moguls.

Shame on the Faroese parliament!

@palmoildetectives the Faroese kill around 1,000 pilot whales per year, after the whales have lived lives in freedom.

Denmark kills 17,000,000 pigs every year after they have lived in the concrete prisons we have built.

Living in Denmark, I feel in no position to criticize the Faroese in this regard.

in reply to Randahl Fink

@palmoildetectives Popping into this conversation because I found a familiar refrain where wonderful friends can't or will not be critical of 'x' because of something else in life being imperfect or seen as 'more wrong.' The supposed 'wrong' or criticism is not to be assessed if there are other presumed 'wrongs.' Does this mean a certain state of correctness at home must exist as an appropriate moral precondition for judgements of other things, places, people? What R the implications?

What is this mystery fruit on my property? Is it edible? Will it turn red? Looks pretty ripe right now.
Thank you for your help!

The EU has passed the AI Act โ€” another set of rules that let them fine US big tech companies since there arenโ€™t any European ones.

The law will require foundation models, including GPT & Gemini, to comply with transparency obligations before they are released to the public. These include respecting EU copyright law and providing a summary of training data. There also rules around preventing systemic risks.

Failure to comply results fines of โ‚ฌ35M or 7% of global revenue

My super old and blind cat Rowdy loves to hang out on the second story porch, but heโ€™s become so skinny he can fit through the railings. He has significant balance issues these days, and when he sticks his head and ENTIRE upper body through, I worry that one wrong move and heโ€™d tumble head first to his death. I stopped letting him go
out there because I was so worried. Saw this on Tik Tok, decided to try it. Havenโ€™t stopped cackling since. ๐Ÿคฃ #CatsOfMastodon

Since Iโ€™m here I might as well beat the drum about an opinion I had five years ago and maintain to this day: โ€œWhy Would Any Man Not Want to Be Bald?โ€ thecut.com/2019/01/bald-guys-aโ€ฆ
in reply to kottke.org

Being bald is pretty great, with one small quibble: my head gets cold quickly. I wear a hat indoors sometimes because of it.

Other than that, 10/10, will keep my head shaven.

Somehow stayed up to 4am watching the Game Awards and I've just been left with an overhanging feeling of frustration and anger at the state of the industry and the sheer disconnect between image and reality

It's an awards show almost without awards, centering adverts and celebrities over winners and creators, unable to address the major issues impacting creators like their concerns over genocide in Palestine or the masses of layoffs that went into making many of the games it chose to center

Far from creators being important, you highlight one game that proudly chose to use AI voices and another that mere weeks ago had a long investigation against published in IGN for how it treated women and all their employees (Black Myth: Wukong)

Creators are the bottom rung of dirt in such a so-called 'celebration' of gaming, presented by brands so you consume, consume, consume ign.com/articles/how-black-mytโ€ฆ

in reply to Alicia Haddick/ใ‚ขใƒชใ‚ทใ‚ข

You have a developer trying to thank someone they lost being ushered off by swelling music and a WRAP IT UP sign on a teleprompter because they need to make way for more ads

It makes you wonder why you make games, write about them, when clearly you don't matter

And it makes the industry seem immature that it can't handle serious issues and has been so unable to cultivate creators as public people that despite economic superiority over other mediums you need to let celebrities talk more about broken feet than award winners because you have no one who can be a similar face and name representative

And no, Kojima isn't that, but 10 minutes to him for a teaser while winners say nothing stings

It's just frustrating, honestly angry, and overshadows even the few games shown that look interesting to play (even if it shouldn't be a focus)

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

this seems like it's supposed to be what NMS was supposed to be.

I hope they can have a good release and if they have to tone down some features for the release, that they end up supporting the game for many years to come, like they did with NMS.

in reply to Alex

@xinayder Not really, completely different style of game to NMS with a single planet
