Work from Noor Pratap Singh and Rob Patro @rob on using transcript trees for DE for power and parsimony. Really excited about these applications going forward!

Once again a study showing interdisciplinarity is more likely to encounter delayed recognition and greater citation sustainability. Didn't read yet, but curious if this is a) simply true or b) has now become something that ppl want to believe and there's bias in the literature.

Looking forward to a critical meta-analysis in 10 years...

we’ve got a week left of 2023 and I don't know how much longer Twitter will exist into 2024. so let's settle it once and for all and find the absolute best tweet of all time. one last hurrah for the posts that changed our cultural sense of humor before that platform atrophies into dust. thebesttweet.com
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @TomSwirly and it doesn’t even communicate with twitter. i’m not using their embeds and i scraped the tweets before hand. it’s pulling the tweets from a DB i control.

Tom Lehrer has made all his music public domain and available for download at the below website. He's not planning on keeping the site up forever. So download things soon, if you are interested.

in reply to Muse

In October 2020, Lehrer transferred the music and lyrics for all songs he had ever written into the public domain.[64][65] In November 2022, he formally relinquished the copyright and performing/recording rights on his songs, making all music and lyrics composed by him free for anyone to use, and established a website (tomlehrersongs.com) from which all of his recordings and printable copies of all of his songs could be downloaded.[66] His statement releasing all his works into the public domain concludes with this note: “This website will be shut down at some date in the not too distant future, so if you want to download anything, don’t wait too long.”

At this time of year the eucalyptus trees shed their bark. Underneath the new bark can have the most amazing colours! The one eucalypt with the pink bark is called a "lemon eucalyptus" because it gives off the most beautiful lemony scent, especially on humid days like today!

It seems that the center of the industry is in Connecticut, while
"Traditionally, the forests of Connecticut, western Rhode Island and south eastern Massachusetts have yielded ample witch hazel to supply the mill. Because of fragmentation of forestland, witch hazel cutters (who typically contract with the mill to supply a fixed amount of witch hazel per season) have had to travel into western Massachusetts and southern Vermont and New Hampshire to obtain material."

Oh, Thanks! So it is not systematic. If I owned that business I would try to develop a dependable supply.

Today it's 25C and humid. The butterflies are out in force, and it struck me that it looks like a white Christmas! I wanted to get a picture of a good flurry of them, but they weren't cooperating when I snapped my photos! The one photo looks good and captures some of them.
These are called Cabbage White butterflies.

Open Source NVIDIA Drivers Are Finally Good #Linux #YouTube youtu.be/IIGEElOsoJw
in reply to Brodie Robertson

Sadly my GTX 1060 won't benefit from this. Hopefully nouveau gets better which makes the 1060 more usable. I will still use proprietary drivers then.

The problem I have with nouveau drivers is that it does not support 2 monitors with my GPU. No way I am going to buy a new GPU.

in reply to Brodie Robertson

as a long time Nvidia user, awesome to see significant movement here. There's still a lot of stuff we need to work on before the Nvidia experience is quite A+ for desktop users.... Especially as we move to Wayland by default everywhere.

Made my ERC application public. Since 2022, ~once/month a colleague has asked to see it (also ppl I don't know). As someone who didn’t have access to previous applications, I know it’s hard to imagine what might be completely wrong or missing, especially in small unis that don’t have much funding support. It's a structural problem and unfair that some have examples & others don’t. So here’s 1 example for those who need them.

@⚪ the lynne creacher not that it is important for you, but I tried to setup bot with Friendica, but Friendica lags the needed API endpoint. Now considering to setup a mastodon or maybe Pleroma instance for the bot.
in reply to utzer [Friendica]

@utzer
hmm, that's a shame. the bot is really only designed to work with mastodon, and it only works with pleroma because they've cloned the API

current project: a GTK GUI for remotely accessing qbittorrent

basically, if you have qbittorrent running on a remote machine, but don't like that you have to use the web-based UI and would prefer a native desktop app, this project is for you!

it's also handy if you have multiple qbittorrent instances, because you can switch between them with a dropdown in the top left

Lynnesbian reshared this.

@thufie hmm, that first one could totally be doable!

i don't yet have a pause/resume all, but it wouldn't be hard to implement

@Sheril. I love books. I still have an English Grammer book and a pocket Oxford Dictionary when I was in School in 1950s and another Grammer book which my father & uncle had studied, published & printed in UK, during their School days in 1910s!🙂

Thank you for the fabulous present of looking into #Peertube this year (not being sarcastic, I recall seeing this account mention words to that effect here).

Nextcloud itself is a wonderful gift, and having your videos on a platform that reflects Nextcloud's stated values will be one of the best gifts of the new year!

Happy 2024!

"They Want You To Forget What A Film Looks Like" by Chris Person

aftermath.site/true-lies-4k-uh…

in reply to packetbrat

great article. the thing is, if they used a little restraint, and dialed in the settings to preserve artifacts like film grain properly, they could probably do a decent enough job -- in cases where no 4K transfer is available, and the best we've got is a TV transfer tape or, god forbid, an anamorphic DVD.

but instead they've dialled it up to Mondo Smooth Mode and created these garish oil painting monstrosities.

i particularly the result in this comparison here:
plain old boring original: i.imgur.com/59Wu9ps.png
cool and epic "future is now old man" version: i.imgur.com/7hfBulf.png

embarrassingly bad.

TIS THE SEASON!
Along with Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever, another of my holiday traditions is watching this music video. So much better than "All I want for Christmas is you", "Last Christmas" or "Simply having a wonderful Christmas time".
