SHUT DOWN WILDLIFE MARKETS NOW!

With their brisk #trade in #endangered and #poached animals, #WildlifeMarkets in many countries are driving the #extinction of #species. The markets are also breeding grounds for #diseases that can also be deadly to humans. There is no excuse for the existence of these markets – it’s time to shut them down NOW.

The outbreak of coronavirus in Wuhan, #China, cast a harsh light on wildlife markets.

Such markets not only play a role in the spread of #disease: by selling poached, endangered animals such as #pangolins, they are pushing species toward #extinction.

Illegal #hunting and the #WildlifeTrade, like #ClimateChange and #HabitatDestruction, are among the causes of the dramatic global #extinction of species. In late 2019, a #UN report issued a stark #warning about the scope of the catastrophe,

predicting that up to one million #animal and #plant species could soon be extinct.

Some #forests are already deemed “empty” in the wake of rampant #hunting and #poaching.

This problem goes beyond China and the current coronavirus pandemic and is driving the extinction of species in many countries, so we are calling for the worldwide closure of wildlife markets.

Please sign and share our petition and speak out against these barbaric markets.

Research showing LLMs' (chat AI) covert racism, triggered by dialects, is even worse than their explicit racism. An example of when you can be shocked but not surprised. via Gary Marcus garymarcus.substack.com/p/cove… #AI #Bias #chatAI #LLM

In logic systems, there is often an 'either/or', some binary that leads down one path or another. If we structure data to be symbiotic, and a little unpredictable, what might that produce?

I'd been wondering for a while why my Digital Ocean bill kept creeping up despite not deploying new stuff. I noticed I was using way more storage in Spaces than expected, even though I'd moved Peertube to Wasabi. Maybe I'd left some videos behind?

Uh, no. I had no idea that Mastodon didn't do media cache clearing on its own until last week. That was added to the docs in 2020 (github.com/mastodon/documentat…) and I spun up this server in 2019.

1.6 TB. Took 4 days to clear 4 years of cache.

#MastoAdmin

in reply to Melissa Avery-Weir

@Gargron might consider putting a default of say 30 days into the first install. Setting up a new server is a bit complicated/confusing if you haven't done one before.

Getting your head around everything on day 1 or even day 30 is hard when your focus is on building connections with follows, relays and maybe #FediFetcher. Otherwise it's a recipe for a storage blackhole. Given images can be re-fetched on demand it seems pretty obvious.

Might even save setting up a S3.

Aren’t public libraries the most magical places? ✨

It’s not just the books. At our little library, kids read with dogs, birders gather & teens find tutors.

And I’ve just learned anyone in the community is welcome to free seed packets of heirloom vegetables, herbs & flowers. No library card required. 🌱

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Public libraries also symbolise the commitment of a place to a community.
My primary school was an exceptional place, with a small but good library.
My high school was a "get your diploma and leave" place. And I just realised it, there was no library there.

This is an incredibly important book—an in-depth, gripping account of among the greatest economic development achievements in US history: cooperative rural electrification.

It demonstrates that powerful co-op policy is possible—and how hard investor-owners will fight it.

Apart from my critiques of crypto in general, this example highlights a major problem for anyone interested in doing democracy on a public, permissionless blockchain: there's no good way to verify identities to prevent sock-puppeting, as this commenter points out. If you're only interested in 1 token = 1 vote (tokenocracy) then you don't need to care about how many wallets one person is voting with, but if you're a 1 person = 1 vote type then this is a big problem, seems to me.
in reply to Josh Davis

@GuerillaOntologist Mostly, yes, identity is harder to take for granted when you can't rely on government identity systems or personal relationships. Though there are "sybil resistance" tools that can enable various forms of identity verification for on-chain purposes: passport.xyz/

It's really disappointing how easily Nintendo can bully these groups into submission. Maybe not surprising in this specific instance, but I'm hoping this doesn't scare off people in the future.

And I just read some of it. I don't agree.
I want my money back. The TV we bought did not have this forced agreement.

That's it! I'm fucking done. My next "TV" is just going to be a monitor. I don't want anymore smarts in what's just being used as a display

With everything that's happening to Yuzu, it's as good a time as any to remind you that it's not the only Switch emulator Ryujinx also exists. Let's hope Nintendo doesn't try and go after them as well ryujinx.org/
in reply to Brodie Robertson

Clean room emulation is legal. Yuzu were charging tens of thousands a month in Patreon knowing it was used for piracy. They had a private discord where they distributed pirated roms, patched leaked prerelease games to work on emulation. Its why this was settled so fast. Nintendo is litigious, but Yuzu weren’t some innocent group squashed by a corporation.
