The baffling intelligence of a single cell… This, long-read deep-dive into how a single e-coli cell uses chemotaxis to find its food is fascinating for those interested in #Biology and human #physiology. TL;DR even simple small cells have an internal bio computer that mimics basic intelligence and adaptability. #CellularBiology #Chemotaxis

Fossil stingray (Cyclobatis sp.)
Upper Cretaceous. Approximately 100.5 million to 66 million years ago. When alive, this creature lived in warm, shallow seas and had a very short tail, which was fitted with a venomous stinger. Discovered in Haqil, Byblos, Lebanon. It just happens to look like an ancient space alien. #science #fossil #archeology #evolution #photo #nature #biology #wildlife

Tom Cavalier-Smith prize DEADLINE EXTENDED https://www.isep-protists.com/post/tcs-prize-deadline-extended

We are pleased to announce that we are extending the deadline for Tom Cavalier-Smith prize nominations to January 31st, and that in light of the complicating factor of the Covid-19 pandemic, we are extending eligibility to 4 years post-PhD.

The Tom Cavalier-Smith prize recognizes contributions to evolutionary #protistology, or related fields (e.g. #protists #biology, #biodiversity or #ecology), by #EarlyCareerResearchers.

I just finished putting together a Wikipedia article on plant biologist Mary Clutter, who was so instrumental in determining mechanisms for gene regulation and expression through her work with plant hormones.

She also was one of the foremost scientists involved in expanding opportunities for women scientists in the latter half of the 20th century, including getting them the recognition they deserved for their accomplishments.

Scientists and the general public have long dismissed the cognitive abilities of cows, pigs, and other livestock. But farm animals are capable of much more than we think.

Marine #microorganisms are crucial for #ocean health.

#Bacteria, #archaea, #fungi, #algae and #viruses make up most of the biomass in the seas and form the base of marine food webs.

They support nutrient cycling and drive crucial biogeochemical processes, including key steps in the carbon, nitrogen and silicon cycles.

Ocean modelling must evolve to take their biological complexity into account.

I have a serious need to know as osculation, for me, has always carried great risk, #autoimmunesystem highly compromised.

While we are still trying to find ways to clean up problems like oil spills in the ocean, microorganisms in the seas have their own insights to impart.

Oil rich soil from the Guaymas Basin has provided German scientists understanding of a mechanism by which archaea in the Alkanophaga break down alkane molecules and thus degrade petroleum through oxidation.

#introduction content continued! as a follow on to nematoduino, I made nematode.farm, which is a (very) simple browser based game where the “opponent” is many instances of the emulated C. elegans nematode. I think this may be the first game ever where enemy AI is based on an emulated organism.

I’m also somewhat known porting a C. elegans nervous system model (connectome) to the Arduino Uno, so it could be used in very low cost or resource constrained platforms.
