Disappointed to learn Cohost has been started by people from the fediverse. You know what the fediverse is but you learned the wrong lessons from it. Yes, I also think some servers are not operated professionally and blocks often get misused, but that is not a reason to replace a free and open system with a locked down one. I wrote on why decentralization matters back in 2018:

LOL they did that because they want to keep user lock-in via monetization an option for them. Clowns

Happy to share the latest manuscript from our lab, in which we propose that eukaryotes evolved from a genomic chimera of Asgard archaea and giant viruses.

biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/20…

This is a controversial topic, but we believe we have strong evidence to suggest a critical viral role in eukaryogenesis.

#viruses #protists #eukaryotes #evolution #TreeOfLIfe #archaea

in reply to Frank Aylward

Over the last decade, strong evidence has accumulated that Asgard archaea are the closest cellular relatives of eukaryotes, but it has remained unclear why some eukaryotic genes, such as multi-subunit RNA polymerase and some DNA polymerase subunits, do not show clear affinity to archaea (i.e. they support a 3-domain tree). We propose that these 3D genes were acquired from viruses, and that eukaryotes are therefore a archaeal-virus chimera.
in reply to Frank Aylward

As bizarre as this all sounds, I believe we have strong phylogenetic evidence supporting this model. Importantly, this model has also been proposed before by Phil Bell based on first principles or eukaryotic organization and similarities between the nucleus and virus factories formed by viruses during infection

doi.org/10.3389/fmicb.2022.858…

in reply to Frank Aylward

absolutely looking forward to studying the paper. Shocked me awake at 1:30 am 😀
in reply to Frank Aylward

How cool is that. Been looking for a paper I read 15 or 20 years ago proposing a viral theory of DNA origin, whereby an inserted DNA virus on an RNA genome would then replicate the whole bacterial genome as DNA, and the bacterium became dependent on that insertion from then on. Will read yours and Phil Bell’s to see if I can find a reference to it.

@albertcardona thanks! Patrick Forterre has published some similar work on how viruses led to the emergence of DNA pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/164764…

Completely mind boggling to me that we threw away 5 billion phones in 2022.

Some of those could have been repurposed: smartphones are hardly innovating any more. The most eco-friendly phone is the one you already have.

We need to publicly support communities like @postmarketOS who work on making these phones repurposable, and @gnome that work on making a polished mobile experience that serves people, not creepy corporations.

Once again, it is cheaper to decarbonize our world now than to pay for the costs of climate damage in the future. “Climate damages by 2050 will be 6 times the cost of limiting warming to 2°.” arstechnica.com/science/2024/0…

Some related facts I saved from this profound Stanford study:

- More antibiotics are fed to farm animals than are used in all of human medicine.

- 82% of global fish populations are depleted.

- By 2050, we will need 3 planets if we continue to eat the way we eat.

Spoons have enormous potential for humanity, but also pose risks, such as being left out on the table and dripping honey on things that shouldn't have honey dripped on them.

That is why we need to re-engineer our spoons to be aligned with human values like keeping our surfaces clean, saving excess honey, and promoting flourishing.

I'm thrilled to announce I've received $1 billion in series A funding to solve this problem at scale.
