The state of social media feeds by @kchayka is another argument for the controls afforded in the fediverse. "It is this torrent of spammy stuff—what some have taken to calling “slop”—that none of us can opt out of on today’s Internet. There is no toggle that allows us to turn off A.I.-generated content in our feeds. There are no filters that sort out A.I.-generated junk the way e-mail in-boxes sift out spam." fediverse

This was very hard to write. I'm at Stanford this fall with a group of researchers that I admire tremendously and cherish as colleagues. But Stanford, Johns Hopkins and now Emory are boosting COVID conspiracy theories and misinformation by hosting these gatherings, even if the organizers did back them into a corner. thenation.com/article/society/…

Installing Nextcloud on Ubuntu 24.04!

JayTheLinuxGuy shares an updated tutorial exploring how to host your own Nextcloud on your favorite VPS 🚀

👩🏼‍💻 A great weekend project!

#selfhosted #datasovereignty #degoogle

youtu.be/fpr37FJSgrw

in reply to Nextcloud 📱☁️💻

run it using the nextcloud snap and it'll take a few minutes, preconfigure everything for you, update itself automatically, and provide an easy way to export and import all your settings and data whenever you want to migrate to a new machine 😀

I've been wanting to make a tutorial video like this for the nextcloud snap for a while now, and also include literally every other step in the process, from OS installation to DNS records to nginx reverse proxy. That would be a fun weekend!

in reply to Nextcloud 📱☁️💻

im deutschsprachigen Raum empfehle ich die sehr gute Anleitung von Carsten Rieger. Alternativ gibt's da auch ein Script. Damit läuft meine Instanz zu Hause ohne Probleme.

I played the demo. Just as I was pleasantly surprised by the pinball/Metroidvania mashup of Yoku's Island Express, I had a lot of fun trying out Pinball Spire's mashup of pinball and classic Castlevania.

just bought it and loving it. I basically rely on you now to introduce me to new games.

I hope it's done better than Civ6 - I play Windows version via Proton as it runs better compared to the Linux port.

"Back at FOSDEM in February we showed off how Matrix could be used for E2EE-preserving messaging interoperability as required by the Digital Markets Act messaging interoperability - and we announced that Element had been working with Meta on integrating with its DMA APIs in order to connect WhatsApp to Matrix."

in reply to Nathan Schneider

@ntnsndr I hope so! It feels like the DMA, or Meta's reading of it is (more than) a little problematic. What's to stop e.g. Google or others from shutting down contract-less SMTP-based email federation on those terms? Unless there's an exemption there, I don't see how those rules wouldn't apply across the board. Cc @pluralistic

US dockworkers suspend ports strike until January

Biden noted the need for ports to be open to "ensure the availability of critical supplies" for those hit by Hurricane Helene, which has left more than 200 people dead in the US south-east.

In other words, the situation would leave Biden the ability to enact "emergency powers" due to the severity of the Hurricane and the ongoing relief efforts... and could have seize control from the companies running/owning them (who are all foreign companies at this point). Presidential power to do so in an emergency is his to wield in such, just as it was Bush's when 9/11 happened or Roosevelt's during the Great Coal Strike or Roosevelt for the Railroads at the start of WW2. Better to share the pie with the workers then lose it all/

Well That Was Effective

The details of the retirement fund changes, automation demands and other concerns haven't been revealed as yet in the general press). I'll see if there's more to pass along from the Shipping news show from Youtube if there is anything interesting.

Nicole Mortillaro of CBC nicely lays out all the things that SpaceX's Starlink is doing to destroy astronomy and LEO.

"how much infrastructure in orbit do we need? How much can we put up there safely? How much can we put up there without having very long-term impacts on the environment?"

And of course, the article include the obligatory "SpaceX did not immediately respond to a CBC request for comment." because SpaceX doesn't think they have to answer to anyone.
