So apparently the term "patch" in software development comes from punched paper tape.

"Small corrections to the programmed sequence could be done by patching over portions of the paper tape and re-punching the holes in that section."

https://itsfoss.com/vs-code-vs-codium/

Most people following probably know some of this.

For the rest of us, @itsfoss has a great break down and more detailed look, at the differences between VS-Code and VS-Codium.

In basic, both are free and open source. However, Microsoft owns VS-Code, which has telemetry elements enabled by default and contains some non-open bits.

Fuck đź‘Ź off đź‘Ź "stale" đź‘Ź bots.

If you are a developer that uses these to automatically close issues that have been valid for months and conveniently rely on a response from ONE person in an ocean of other responses, please reconsider your life choices. If there were no other responses? Fine. That's on the person to reply. But the bot should immediately eject itself from the conversation the moment someone else chimes in. Closing issues like this seriously hurts discoverability for developers and users alike.

Like the legend of the phoenix, we're resurrecting Mozilla Send, an end-to-end encrypted file share service, and bringing it under our wings as Thunderbird Send. In this clip from S1E5 of the ThunderCast, developer Chris Aquino gives us a sneak peek of the new - wait, old - er, reborn project!

Learn how #Thunderbird Send will help you overcome your file upload woes, respect your privacy, safeguard against abuse, and hopefully change your #email experience for the better.

Want to know how to add a #Mastodon share button to your website? Check out how I accomplished it using a little bit of #HTML and #Javascript.

Boosts are welcomed for maximum reach! 🙏🏼

Oh look, Google being Google.

(In case you were thinking of learning/using Go, I’d say skip it. There are plenty of other fish in the sea. Unless you like telemetry by default in your programming languages and tools, that is. In fact, just don’t touch anything tainted by Google if you can help it.)

A post-migration re-#introduction!

I’m currently a postdoc in Marlene Behrmann’s lab at Carnegie Mellon. I’m broadly interested in understanding the #psychology and #neuroscience underlying the #development of cognitive abilities such as categorization.

Recently I’ve been exploring the broader biological network that may support may object categorization (e.g., https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tics.2022.09.019) and the #computational processes that may support few-shot categorization in infancy (e.g., https://doi.org/10.7554/eLife.74943)

Maybe a naive #mastodev question, but are their pagination/cursoring parameters for the "Context" method?

I'm not seeing it in the documentation at https://docs.joinmastodon.org/methods/statuses/#context

If a post has 40+ replies, will they *all* be returned? #development

Just noticed that the Mastodon Web UI is using the "translate" CSS class on Content Warnings? Bug, or just some hacky class re-use?

(I was trying to write a userscript to hide the CW section entirely when auto-expand is enabled)

Are there any developers out there interested in making a Film & TV review/discussion platform for the Fediverse?

Almost every time I've mentioned the Fediverse's excellent book platform @bookwyrm (https://joinbookwyrm.com) there have been people asking whether a film/TV version would be possible.

Does this sound doable to devs? Maybe it could use wikidata (https://www.wikidata.org) for film data the same way BookWyrm and @inventaire do with books?

If you know someone looking for new Fediverse ideas, could you pass this on to them?
