We believe the internet should be a place where everyone feels safe, respected and empowered to connect.

That’s why this Giving Tuesday we’re launching a campaign to fund a vital new role at Mastodon:

✨Trust & Safety Lead✨

With the recent U.S. elections and many changes to come, protecting our community has never been more important.

We officially kick off on *Tue, Dec 3rd* but if you’d like, you can make an impact today: givebutter.com/givingmastodon

Thank you for your support!

@fringemagnet To be clear I appreciate that you tried verifying the image and finding the original source. I hope that you appreciate me contributing to that as well. I don't want over 600 people to be misled about a fake image.

The incredible (and often overlooked) mountain landscape of the Isle of Harris, Scotland. This place is rugged and unvisited, partly because the beaches of the island steal away attention and partly because of its unforgiving character. Many of these areas are fairly unexplored in terms of photography and I'm excited to spend a bit more time doing just that over the coming years.

@Kenny Chaffin Do you have any special dishes you are known for? People love my cornbread! It was an accidental creation that came out of having to find substitutes for US ingredients I couldn't find in Australia.
in reply to Muse

Nah....just the standard fare..... roast butterball turkey, Costco pies, sweet potatoes with marshmallow topping, mashed potatoes, stuffing from the bag, turkey gravy and vegan gravy for my daughter.

in reply to Muse

The bone tent is a lovely festive touch!

Screenshot of BlueSky post showing the power of composable moderation.

This post illustrates what I tried to tell folks here about how even though there are nazis on Twitter, and have always been nazis on Twitter, the lack of hidden replies, combined with a large community to file reports, meant that most Black women didn't see most of the abuse.👍🏿

Contrast that with Mastodon, where people fight against TheBadSpace, hidden replies are a thing, and folks don't believe Black users about abuse.

in reply to Bam

Yes, very aware of the issue. Just wanted to highlight the specific vector of abuse.

Not really sure what other purpose this reply mode serves. Do many (any) people use 'Followers only' for anything other than this kind of harrassment?

in reply to Mastodon Migration

Some people prefer to keep their posts to a closed group of people instead of publishing everything for the world to see. This could be because they don't want their employer to see what they write online, or because they're from a vulnerable group that's at risk of receiving harassment online, or because they don't want their thoughts to be recorded on the internet forever. It's a fairly popular method of posting on Mastodon.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @mastodonmigration @Bam could the recipient poster have some control e.g. restrict "specific people" and "followers only" so that option is only available to people the recipient themself follows?
in reply to Eugen Rochko

This makes sense, and several replies in this thread are from people who clarify that they use this mode for the purposes you describe. As others note this mode is also used as a means to harass people while remaining hidden from public view. So, both things seem true. A lot of the discussion centers around how to preserve the positive uses, while addressing the potential for abusive uses of the mode.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @mastodonmigration @Bam ah, but isn't the point, that it gets abused? So would it not be necessary as a plattform that advertises to want to protect minorities, that technical features will be changed to protect minorities first?
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron

"Some people prefer to keep their posts to a closed group of people"

The use case discussed here is a bit different.

You can tag a non-follower in your post, then set the post to followers-only, making it so that the person you mentioned can see your post, your followers can pile on, and nobody else gets to witness this.

There really is no reason for this functionality, a followers-only post should not be shown to people who are not followers.

@mastodonmigration @Bam @mekkaokereke

in reply to Stefan Bohacek

@stefan @mastodonmigration @Bam So this was built out in accordance with early feedback around 2016/2017 and meant to address two things: One, the major downside of "protected mode" on Twitter cutting you off from being to talk to non-mutuals; and two, making sure that you could see if someone was trying to dogpile you in secret. I'm not dead set on this behaviour but it needs to be evaluated in full context. I'll bring it up to the team on Monday.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @stefan @mastodonmigration @Bam "followers only" really should mean the followers of the poster AND the followers of any tagged person.

but you know "follow sync" is one of those huge/hard unsolved problems.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron

"I'll bring it up to the team on Monday."

Thank you, really appreciate it!

And thank you also for providing the context behind why this behavior exists, very interesting. Really shows how hard it can be to get this right.

Here's my take on the #enshittification of internet technology over the 2010s, based on the word @pluralistic coined. I've added "developer enshittification" to the mix (see: React). cybercultural.com/p/enshittifi…

However, I do end on a note of optimism: the decentralized web as represented by the fediverse, Mastodon and potentially Bluesky. "It's a new world for those who have chosen to leave the Enshittocene behind them. Won't you join us?"

in reply to Evan Prodromou

I think a fair litmus test for whether something is a fediverse app would be if, moderation reasons nonewithstanding, you could follow your cosocial.ca account from it and vice versa. This is true for Mastodon, and true for Flipboard, but not currently true for Threads. I don’t think it’s a fallacy to think that.

Marketing is deeply abused in our digital age. I'm tired of the manipulations, misinformation, and disinformation. On the otherhand I want to know when something I do like/need is available: such as new episodes of Star Trek, or soaps that don't include colours or fragrances that cause me to break out into itchy hives.

I've just stumbled across Trust Web Times which specialises in making people aware of abuses in marketing, as well as pointing out ways to market with integrity. I will have to dig further to see how I feel about this site. Nevertheless, some of their stuff is genuinely enlightening, like their articles about Adtech.

Lies Hurt You & Hold You Back: A Look at Lying in the Workplace

..."Harris considers white lies to be the most dangerous of all because although we imagine that we are telling these lies out of compassion for others, we rarely understand or anticipate their damage.

"This is because by lying, we deny those around us access to the best available information, and they, in turn, are then left to come to decisions or conclusions based on incorrect evidence."

I realised I've been mostly negative on here of late... so...

last night I got to go to a Science Awards night... along with hearing about great work from people who save lives and make lives better, a junior colleague got a medal for an amazing piece of work on how our blue marble works - awesome! She gave a perfect thank-you speech neatly traversing the science, the people who enabled it and navigating it all with a trio of young kids! Nice one Bella.

Bodo Stern at #HHMI is spot on in his assessment of the decision by #WebOfScience to stop indexing @eLife articles: "Rather than helping move scholarly communication forward, Web of Science, by punishing a leader in the field, is in fact holding it back."

coalition-s.org/blog/how-the-w…

@cOAlitionS_OA

in reply to Ludo Waltman

"Web of Science de-listed eLife because the new publishing model can result in the publication of studies with 'inadequate' or 'incomplete' evidence ...

other journals, which use the traditional and confidential peer review model, remain indexed in the Web of Science even though some of the articles they publish also have inadequate or incomplete evidence. The difference is that they do not label these articles as such."
