in reply to Devine Lu Linvega

@neauoire And now I wonder about your criteria for something to be considered decentralized 🤔
in reply to Jack Rusher

(sorry I didn't want to put you two against each others, and yes, Jack and I are friends from way back)

But it's a good question, so until now my expectation for decentralization for something like bluesky, was merely, can you basically just spin a server, generate your DID and hop on. Which I thought was just around the corner. But I hadn't realized that not only can you not join in without asking bluesky, the solution is more bureacratic than that, it involves something akin to a domain name authority.

So, that infrastructure will NEVER be open, as the network grows, the initial payload will explode in size and get rid of smaller replication services until only amazon scale services are even capable to "mine", and so you've got 3 new arbiters that tells us who gets to participate and who doesn't, and you can be sure that Bezos and Elon are going to be on that board. It sounds to me like an awful deal, it feels more like picking a Battle Net server than a federation, to use Joe's metaphore.

I heard someone this week call Bluesky a honeypot for leftist, and I think I see it now.

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

you mention in the article that it's a flatpak but the nvidia download page just has a binary. perhaps my reading comprehension is poor but where's the flatpak? flathub?

EDIT: disregard. i am, indeed, dense. the flatpak is nabbed with their installer.

thanks for reporting on this!

Is "as a person of color" something actual PoC say or is it just something white men say preceding something racist?
in reply to Tengu

@Tengu I think Americans have a tendency to put very high value on testimony and personal observation, it can be so tiring.
in reply to ★ 岩野凪咲【Iwano Nagisa】(Daniella Anastasia)

I was more trying to point out that exact turn of phrase (and how racists try and use it mask their bigotry) not the general idea of personal testimony.

Not a fan of the ceaseless horrors. They’re starting to get annoying

Went exploring old backups of old webroots and found this picture I took at work like, 20+ years ago

I thought it had been lost to time, but here it is, highlighting how JetDirect wasn't exactly a safe and secure protocol, and reminding me that the other admin got upset with me until I removed it

Fun times

the internet was much more muchier. it lost its muchness.
in reply to Devine Lu Linvega

oh I definitely enjoy websites like those of yours and of folk in the webring. I also still like the idea of maintaining a space in which to house works and collected knowledge; but then it pretty much just sits there, gathering dust, becoming insignificant in a way.

not that my goal is to garner popularity. I don't have the words yet to clearly communicate how it feels to exist right now. the closest I can compare it to would be something like camping in a once gorgeous and serene spot but now there's glampers and instagrammers all over the place. and to sort of stand out and be heard, you'd have to have already been quite established, or be forced to resort to the tactics of content creators (which I find unsettling)

@neauoire I like to imagine my website as a little sketch book of words. Sometimes the sketches are just for me, sometimes they are for sharing, and then once they are in my little book I can show them around whenever the topic comes up.

I don't even broadcast all the changes I make to it. There are many pages that just appear without any sort of forshadowing. Pages like my bookmarks just updating whenever.

in reply to Devine Lu Linvega

I think you have good connections and with a community that's much closer. I toyed with the idea of becoming an established artist and making a career out of it, on and off in the past few years, and that was one of the reasons I started my website to begin with.

while I did meet interesting people through my site, it ultimately didn't really do much for my career pursuits. it doesn't help that I'm quite isolated where I'm at (ironic, given it's a city of millions).

I've secretly envied those who seem to be doing quite well in that regard and I've wondered how they got there: consistency perhaps but for how long, or some stroke of luck. the road more traveled of promoting oneself isn't at all enticing though.

to me, social media killed the idea of having a portfolio. then AI and vibe coding killed whatever programming and gamedev projects I've been planning. the earliest iteration of my site had short stories, but now I don't see myself wanting to get back to writing.

I still have art, but there's nothing to be done with it; and so I'm stuck on what to do, withering in the meantime

built-in (mostly) I had a soundcard too, but only for live shows, which never crashed on stage(thank goodness)

@neauoire i'm guessing what happened is that VLC made the OS change the sample rate (instead of adapting to the existing one) and renoise didn't adapt to the sample rate that changed under its feet.

I've been politely described as "direct". I wasn't always that way. Now I am. I decided it's not my job to bend over backwards to make people feel good about themselves at great expense to myself.

@Richard You are right. I find it's still of value to my own soul (so to speak) to be direct from a place of kindness, truth, and strength. I don't want to be an abusive jerk like my parents were.

What is the best coding font / UI and why is it smalltalk?
in reply to 256k

cream is one of those fonts that either people LOVE it, or absolutely despise it. I personally find it really nice, the capitals sucks, but otherwise, it's quite pretty.
in reply to Devine Lu Linvega

@neauoire i find it quite charming as well. there's a delicateness to it almost like a handwritten look, with a small blend of medieval.

But seeing this really shows why the macintosh team's head exploded when they saw it and why they completely pivoted to. erm... rip it off and be first to market.... :sadlinux:

Coding with self-modifying systems gives me these kind of animistic thoughts: "This byte is at times opcoding, and some other times, integering"

No longer using the Xerox Smalltalk one? :neocat_0_0:

@kirtai ank24, I've been using it for about a year, it's kinder to my eyes I think. It's also easier to extend(drawing latin extended, cyrillic, etc..)
