that time I was busy and now you are on a roll with great guests, and I don't wanna break your streak of important people.

But if you feel like having a lower profile episode, hit me up, I'm gonna wager that I'm almost as close to your time zone as one gets (except for other Australians and New Zealanders), so you won't even have to sacrifice a night for it 😂

Tonight, we played a few games of Nego, a strategy game with cats. The rules are very simple, but there are some nice twists. The design of the physical pieces was our favorite part.

The game was designed by Yuka Morii, a Japanese clay artist and Pokemon illustrator.

I enjoyed it, but my partner felt it was boring. We both felt the game sort of plays itself as spaces become more limited. We both like it as a piece of art, though. The game is available here: japantrendshop.com/nego-cats-b…

Enterprise Linux Can Force NVIDIA To Fix Wayland #Linux #YouTube youtu.be/5VGMdLAKQ0c
in reply to Brodie Robertson

well it was a pain with Nvidia graphics card. So I made sure the new ThinkPad i bought doesn't have nividia !
in reply to Brodie Robertson

I think for desktop users, using NVK (when it's ready) might be a better bet for proper Wayland support.

This is Ground Control to Taylor Wang
You're running out of time
And we'd like to move along now, as you see
Shut your module down oh, doctor, would you, please?

For here are you sitting in a space lab
There's nothing you can do
Drop Dynamics failed
And on you NASA's bailed …

This is Taylor Wang to Ground Control
I'm not some clueless hack
More time, please or I'm just not coming back
Non-negotiable, or do give me the sack

For here am I sitting in a space lab
I'll fix it if I can
My module worked on Earth
And more time I think it's worth …

in reply to Muse

I feel awful for Taylor Wang. What a thing to have hanging over your head.

This is an interesting article about how to increase people's ability to care.

The world feels/is more dangerous these days. Part of it is our attitudes. Marketing and politics have taught us to distrust one another. As more people are impoverished or feel the threat of impoverishment, the angrier they become. This is hardly surprising.

When pet dogs or cats are abused and abandoned, they can often become distrustful and aggressive. We are no different. It takes a lot of consistent security and care to turn these behaviours around. If we want to resolve any number of the problems we are facing in the world, we have to stop thinking in terms of who needs to be punished. Stopped--yes, rehabilitated--yes, used as an outlet for vengeance--NO!

Human rights start with recognising everyone's humanity.

Who we care about is limited – but our research shows how humans can expand their ‘moral circle’

in reply to Muse

what if the person suffering was actually someone we disliked, or even someone who may have caused harm to others? Would we care then?

Absolutely. If we are to hold on to our humanity we must do this. However, if they hurt me? I will care from whatever distance and abstraction I feel is necessary for the safety of me and mine.

What happens when an astronaut in orbit says he’s not coming back? “Hey, if you guys don’t give me a chance to repair my instrument, I’m not going back.” arstechnica.com/space/2024/01/…
in reply to kottke.org

this is a plotline in The Martian. Crew had to bypass multiple redundant systems to avoid being overridden by NASA from the ground. But in the end it’s more of a “Do you want to give up your entire life’s goal of being an astronaut?” Cause you aren’t going to be employed in the field ever again if you do it.
