I’ll be speaking at #AMRO24 in Linz, Austria on May 8! Come along to hear me talk about how the tech industry is much more overtly embracing government and military to protect itself.

This looks fascinating. I will leave it here for reading later.

Completely mind boggling to me that we threw away 5 billion phones in 2022.

Some of those could have been repurposed: smartphones are hardly innovating any more. The most eco-friendly phone is the one you already have.

We need to publicly support communities like @postmarketOS who work on making these phones repurposable, and @gnome that work on making a polished mobile experience that serves people, not creepy corporations.

They fixed it: NASA is able to talk to Voyager I again. “For the first time since November, NASA’s Voyager 1 spacecraft is returning usable data about the health and status of its onboard engineering systems.” blogs.nasa.gov/voyager/2024/04…
in reply to kottke.org

@wonka

“The next step is to enable the spacecraft to begin returning”

<new line>

“science data again.”

Just had a brief moment there.

The blogging platform #Ghost is working on adding #ActivityPub integration. That means, among other things, being able to follow Ghost-powered blogs and comment on articles right from your Mastodon account. The website they made to explain their plans is really nice! This is what momentum looks like.

@hstone32 then you have no idea what programming is, if books titled literally "learn python programming" and "C++ programming for Linux systems" isn't programming to you
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

Don't get fooled by the picture that gets embedded with the link. Not the books on sale and there is some interesting stuff there from entry to expert level on various topics of... Yes I double checked and I can confidently call it "programming"!

Once again, it is cheaper to decarbonize our world now than to pay for the costs of climate damage in the future. “Climate damages by 2050 will be 6 times the cost of limiting warming to 2°.” arstechnica.com/science/2024/0…
in reply to kottke.org

I’m reminded of the old TV commercial where the mechanic says “Pay me now or pay me later.” I believe it was an ad for an oil change product.

@waldoj capitalism demands we don’t spend on this now to increase profits this quarter. That problem is 100 quarters away and thus future capitalists’ problem to solve.

It’s #EarthDay & I’m giving a talk all about the global food system & its impact on the environment.

The agricultural sector is one of the most significant + immediately scalable places to have impact.

Since my talk isn’t public, here’s a great piece from @globalecoguy & the good folks at Project Drawdown. drawdown.org/news/insights/how…

Some related facts I saved from this profound Stanford study:

- More antibiotics are fed to farm animals than are used in all of human medicine.

- 82% of global fish populations are depleted.

- By 2050, we will need 3 planets if we continue to eat the way we eat.

Spoons have enormous potential for humanity, but also pose risks, such as being left out on the table and dripping honey on things that shouldn't have honey dripped on them.

That is why we need to re-engineer our spoons to be aligned with human values like keeping our surfaces clean, saving excess honey, and promoting flourishing.

I'm thrilled to announce I've received $1 billion in series A funding to solve this problem at scale.

2024 truly is the Year of the Linux desktop, a Wayland protocol was opened and then merged in just over a month and it only took that long because they're required to wait 30 days before merging anything. gitlab.freedesktop.org/wlroots…

Is that merged? It's still showing as draft status to me (note that I'm on mobile so maybe I'm missing something)

Every Linux Distro Must Learn From XZ #Linux #YouTube youtu.be/4I7fgVuXZuU
in reply to Brodie Robertson

I think the arguments made in this article, though valid as they are, fall short one step: Even if you manage to set up a proper, financially supported supply chain for Linux distributions, you still haven't solved the really pressing issue in FOSS: Where do you find the people to do the actual work? Being paid does not prevent burnout and money is not enough in today's market to attract talent to do grunt work.

in reply to Mr.Mark "The Sharpie King"

In wich State was it, that librarians are forbidden to associate? There was something in the News here recently, but I couldn‘t find it anymore. 🧐

A bill in Louisiana, HB 777, would make it a crime for librarians to use public funds to join the American Librarian Association or attend an ALA conference, punishable with prison time and hard labor for up to two years.

#libraries #education #books #librarians #theocracy

in reply to Jen Sorensen

For a minute, I thought you mentioned "hard labor" in jest---imprisonment for such "offenses" being already ridiculous and anti-democratic--but there it is listed as a possible punishment in conjunction with imprisonment. What a ridiculous pile of BS, speaking as a former librarian. Louisiana is absenting itself from the American experiment, along with a few of her sister states. Buh bye. (I'm in Florida and we are essentially dropping off into the sea.)

Hello fedi. i am trying to solve the "fetch all replies" problem once and for all that makes the fedi feel a lot more desolate and with a lot more reply guys in it than it should be. this is take two, where before i had it triggered by a button, but now i think it should happen on the server-side whenever you expand a post. can anyone help me out figure out how to make this more efficient by only fetching posts that the server doesn't already have? i am not sure what the best strategy would be, and if anyone with experience doing efficient rails and SQL stuff could give me some pointers that would be gr8. the patch is actually extremely simple it just needs a few nice things to make it not DDoS everyone.
