Nope. Nopenopenope. Fuck this. And everyone involved. And their ancestors.

Don't blame their ancestors, but their descendants will certainly have some cleaning up to do.

So relieved and delighted to have this stuff out into the world where it can help new (and maybe also some experienced) fedi admins and mods think through their work. And maybe help convey to others at least some of what makes the fediverse such a structurally interesting place.

I'm even more optimistic about the fediverse than I was when we jumped into this—and sobered, too, by how much work there is to be done. But I think it's doable.

#OTD in 1911.

Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre by museum employee Vincenzo Peruggia and was not recovered until two years later.

The theft and subsequent recovery in 1913 led to the publication of many cultural depictions such as the 1915 opera Mona Lisa, two early 1930s films (The Theft of the Mona Lisa and Arsène Lupin) and the song "Mona Lisa" recorded by Nat King Cole—one of the most successful songs of the 1950s.

You might want to reconsider your use of Anaconda / Conda. Updated terms of service are unclear about what is and isn't allowed under their free tier, with potential of contamination of "off limits" packages due to dependency resolution (using environment files).

@marcoshuerta Ow, thanks for this! I didn't look for alternatives yet and this might just deal with all the concerns I have.

I mentioned on LinkedIn that the backlash might be swift with people pivoting to alternatives fast, but I didn't know the ecosystem was already in place.

in reply to Koen Hufkens, PhD

The `conda` package manager (and mamba) are BSD-3, so Anaconda's TOS only apply to their repository/channels. miniforge uses the conda package manager, but the default channel is conda-forge (which I prefer anyway...)

conda-forge had Apple Silicon binaries of pandas etc early on, so I've been using their channel via miniforge since I got an M1 Mac Mini a few years back.

I wonder how well VAC will detect and actually ban this stuff... Because it's terrible at catching a ton of other methods of cheating and Valve don't seem to care.

The crackdown on pro-Palestinian protests and press covering the demonstrations in the streets of #Chicago during the #DNC should be seen not as a surprise, but part of a strategy of counter-insurgency.

This is coupled with an attempt by the party to incorporate a "progressive" veneer - made possible by politicians like #AOC and others - which seeks to crack these movements and defang them.

To move people off the streets and herd them back into the terrain of representative politics. To expand the divide between "peaceful protesters" and "outside agitators" to its logical conclusion: the nullification of class struggle and anti-colonial conflict.

The Democrats want to throw a wet blanket on protest movements and social struggle, and instead make them part of a broader coalition that takes orders from the party apparatus that is managed by those loyal to the Pentagon, Wall Street, and ruling class interests.

Being honest, I have had serious struggles with my mental health, plus a new schedule at work to include weekend overnights.

Here, have a picture of my character, Morgan, as an apology.

As @CaitlinWaddick writes here: loomio.com/d/16wSnmrt/fwg-orga…

We in the #SocialCoop Finance Working Group feel strongly that it is time to build out a serious Legal Working Group. This has been an ongoing discussion, but we need support on:

- Incorporation
- International membership
- Liability protections
- Emerging regs on social media

And this doesn't fall under the banner of any existing working group.

in reply to Nathan Schneider

It would be ideal to have a working group composed of both professional lawyers and non-lawyers with an interest in relevant issues. We don't want an overly professionalized entity, but one that is above all accountable to our shared values.

Like the other WGs, stipends should be paid to participants.

in reply to Nathan Schneider

Who might be open to taking the lead on forming a living Legal Working Group? The commitment might look like quarterly meetings plus being responsive to questions from other working groups.

People who have in the past expressed interest include: @beckett @mako @dazinism @sam @Matt_Noyes @Eliot_L @dmokreis @GiacomoSansoni
@coopartisans @FreeScholar @toddxy @JosephAndriano @BillySmith

Can you help? Maybe start by organizing an initial meeting?

Thank you!

in reply to Nathan Schneider

@beckett @mako @dazinism @sam @Matt_Noyes @Eliot_L @dmokreis @GiacomoSansoni @coopartisans @FreeScholar @toddxy @BillySmith

Being the lead would be difficult for me at this time. However, I am happy to be supportive of the effort and join it.

That said, if no one is willing to step up, I would be happy to facilitate the first meeting just so we can get the discussion going and discuss who will lead it.

in reply to Joseph Andriano

@beckett @mako @dazinism @sam @Matt_Noyes @Eliot_L @dmokreis @GiacomoSansoni @coopartisans @FreeScholar @toddxy @BillySmith

Assuming no one else wants to facilitate the first meeting, to ensure this does not fall through the cracks, if you are interested in this endeavor please respond directly to me with your availability for a 1 hour meeting in September using the social.coop Matrix video chat. Thanks!

in reply to Nathan Schneider

Happy to help. I figure if we can do one meeting to at least elaborate on the scope of the problem and propose some solutions it would be a good first step.
in reply to Nathan Schneider

Sorry I don't think I have time right now to be involved although I think this is a worthwhile endeavor.
in reply to Nathan Schneider

@beckett @mako @dazinism @sam @Matt_Noyes @Eliot_L @dmokreis @GiacomoSansoni @coopartisans @FreeScholar @toddxy @JosephAndriano

I'll be happy to help, but i am currently undergoing chemotherapy, so while i can contribute, i won't be at my best for the next few years.

Please let me know when the initial meetings are taking place. 😁
